-
y what you doing? it just unbolts i think from underneath

Illyun
Take a lot in the Manuals TT posted a while ago. They give a detailed description etc of how to remove all bumpers etc and sizes for screws etc.
And remember when downloading right click on the link and select "Save target as".
Hope that helps

Hi 08Micsta,
Apologies for my ignorance, but can you let me know where these manuals are? I'd like to take my brake disks off and give them some treatment as even after being replaced once I'm fed up looking at rust on a 5 month old car!?
-
New golf they are or were in the mk5 maintenance section if there not there i sadly down loaded them all on to mine. :smug:

Sorry to hijack the threat, but my rear disc's are really starting to turn very rusty now , will the dealer do anything about this?
-
I'll look again, having laptop problems here GRRRRR

I had them swapped out under warranty, all 4, but 2 months later and they are even worse than before. I'm going to try and find some good heat proof paint if anyone has any recommendations, and post a guide including masking templates you can print off and cut out for the disks.

Thanks NewGolf. That sounds like a more sensible plan.
Does anyone know if you need a special tool for the rear brakes to turn the piston when pushing it back in before reassembly?

I dont think you need it to just remove/replace the brake disks, just undo the caliper and the 2 torx screws. But I believe this would do the job if you did need one

A lot of the links in the MKV maintenance section do not work anymore
Anyone who downloaded them, could they re-insert them for us all. Ta.

Hammerite paint should do that job.

Can you get it smoothh, and as a spray as I dont want to see any brushmarks?
-
What about something like a High Temp Spray? (example - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120286340312).
-
....Important to use a high temperature proof paint - I've read stories of aftermarket paint surface breaking down under the heat from brakes. You may be surprised by the high temperatures (when driving with lots of brake use).
-
I may have missed it... But dont VW dealers have the obligatory duty to respray when rust forms?
I didnt download the manuals but if you want a link to the one you are looking for I can find it I think.

Again, aplologies for hijacking your thread Illyun, but didn't someone on here have there 'bells' painted by a VW dealer a few months back? I Know MarkyMark had a VW dealer refuse to paint his recently
That was me Greenouse!!. i have pics somewhere
-
There was someone. I tried running a search but not much came up.
Didnt he get a replacement set of Monza's too?

Not sure Mike, I just remember them looking a little white in the pics he posted.............. It's probably a casualty of the server failure
-
Bloddy server.
I will look harder
-
I've already had mine replaced fully once, these have also gone rusty
That old saying, if you want something doing properly, do it yourself.....
I'll order some of that heat proof spray and give it a go.
-
^^ I think that's the only answer as VW do not seem to have changed the part to items that don't rust so badly, so quickly  Not good really for a 20k + car VW!!
-
Ok paint ordered, just trying to find how to get them off now.

....True! But I don't think I'll be repainting my Monza II's though!
Let us know how you get on (although personally I went OTT and changed the bells by getting an AP Racing Big Brake kit).
What colour are you doing your bells?

I'm going to keep them original silver, almost the same colour as the standard wheels. Rather than silver/rust coloured which looks awful with such open wheels.
I dont want to really go down the replacement brake road as I generally trade my cars in when they get 2 years old, and find the GTI brakes fine to be honest. Yours look good though RR, no rust issues there eh?!
-
Was me , yes i had my bells done under warranty by my local dealers F.o.c, they were Grey and not white as the pic makes them, and didnt flake or anything in the time i had the Grey GTi (3 weeks) although My laser Blue GTi was also done F.o.c and lasted a year with no probs at all.

Phylis's Bells were already painted Red, im gonna re-do mine and also do the edges of the brake discs in red cus i think it will look good, without going OTT.

Oh and can you post a pic of them in red on Phylis, I'm not convinced which colour to use now lol!
-
I gave mine to the dealer to do, sorry mate, thats all i know.
-
I never noticed your bells were red at Inters?? Have you had them done recently?? Pics
-
ill have a hunt and see if i can find any sly shots............
-
Am I going to have trouble getting the rear bells off without special tools then?
-

one you can see my Red bells
-
I likey  Don't know if you realised but I am partial to a bit of red here and there myself
-
indeed matie!!, i may do the edges of the brake disc like the resprayed photo of my grey GTi, i wonder if that would look ok in red aswell??

Will that not mean as the disc wears down you will get red paint in your brake dust?? That won't do your wheels any good mate!
-

-

Strewth - you don't need that expensive monstrosity. Look in your local ToolStation catalogue for a Draper or Sealey item, at around £10-15 !!
