Got to swap the rear discs and pads soon, so was wondering if anyone has used one of these windback things before? Can't figure out how they work from looking at the picture.

I just used the spanner from my angle grinder, it's free and it works!
-
That's just a normal spanner? Interesting.
-
Well not a normal one, the type that has 2 pins used to unlock the disc, like this:

Don't have anything like that unfortunately. Looks like the cheap ebay gadget then.
-
If I remember my angle grinder wasn't much more expensive

Grrrr, wish I hadn't bought it before that reply, tried it today and it just isn't big enough. Plus it would have been awkard to use even if it did fit. Looks like I'm going to have to spend more money.
Don't buy one of these!

No that would be too easy
-
With the rear pads the calipers have to be rotated as well as pushed.
-
yeah if you use a g clamp on the rears it will trash the handbrake mechanism
-
:afro: and there ya go - membership to this place - priceless
Cheers  will remember that if and when i do the rears
-
was going to do my rears myself but not after i just read all that!sounds like far to much hard work
-
That's before I get to the allen key bolts that look like they've never been touched. Gonna take a lot of swearing to them feckers off!

i just changed my pads and discs all round and with no probs all i used was a plactic g clamp from a builders shop with a pice of bar spred over the pistons and made sure that the fluid cap was off and they went on easy with no probs the only thing i had troble with was the caliper frame bolts ( frame that holds the caliper on )lol because they had rusted and needed to be cut off got new bolts and all working it was on a 89 mk2 gti 16v so dont no if thats any different :)
