Title: CarData scammers - phonecall online for you to listen to!!!!
Post by: synnea on 01 August 2008, 14:12
Hi all,

My MK5 GT TDI has been for sale for the past week on auto trader and ebay. I had a call yesterday from this girl Lisa from Car Data. They wanted me to pay 99 quid as they 'had lined up buyers in my area' for my car and would aim to sell it in 7 days!! At this point I was a bit wary and told the girl I would have a think about it and for her to call me back today. I did this to give me time to google their name and see. Try it for yourselves and you will see its nothing but a scam and also reports of people who unfortunately gave them money!! Its a discrace.

So, today I prepared for her call. I located a number of articles online and printed them out to have as reference for her phone call. I also recorded my phone call which I am hoping to put online on youtube for you all to listen to. One such article I used was from the Daily Mirror, they had heard about car data scams so bought a Lada for 50 quid, a complete banger of a thing. They put it on auto trader for £3000. Of course no-one phoned apart from cardata who subsequently told them they had buyers lined up for it!!!

I am discusted that companies can get away with this. I intend to report this to watchdog and also fair trading. About 15 mins ago I had the call back from Lisa. I seemed all interested and proceded to question the information she had about my car. All she knew was that it was a Golf. No info at all on my extras, leather, cd changer etc. I then asked her who the people in Northern Ireland were that had expressed an interest. Answer: the computer tells us. All a load of rubbish. I then asked her if she would be able to help me sell my wifes Alfa Romeo Starlet for 15 grand. She said no problem. As we all know its a Toyota Starlet but before I broke the news that there was no such car she proceded to tell me that the company have 28 yrs experience and that as it was an alpha romeo it would sell well. 28 yrs experience you would think their employees would know their cars.

I went on to explain that in the past 24 hours I had researched her company. Won't bore you but went through loads of complaints I had found. She tried to fob me off everytime I came at her with proof its all a scam.

Simply to warn you all - they wanted 100 quid from me to do nothing. I am reporting it to as many trading standards as I can.

had the same problem when selling my Golf GTI MK2 on Pistonheads. Please beware of these people, they are rip off merchants.

Good job on putting this up on the forums mate and good luck in reporting the thieves to the OFT and I'd take it to the media again!

This has been going on for years.

Soon as i say ''are you a canvasser?''

reply in an angry tone  ''NO WE ARE AN AGENCY'' and the phone cuts off.

They have had a 6 figure turn over which is shocking.

I get these calls all the time. I even question them e.g..

''why doesnt that stupid fool just look on autotrader and buy it directly off me?''

''how come I havnt heard of your company before?''

''YOUR A CON SO f**k OFF''

a reason for doing the forwarding thingymebob that autotrader offer as it then costs the company and logs the caller so they don;t bother...i did this with my mk3 but thankfully sold it a fellow dubber from clubgti forum.

Companies like this are just scum

You can get into deep trouble for recording a conversation

well done for the call chap... if it stops people getting done over then I applaud you! :afro:

You can get into deep trouble for recording a conversation

you can...

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/money/consumer_affairs/article2274275.ece (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/money/consumer_affairs/article2274275.ece)

It is legal to record all calls without telling the person you speak to, provided that it is for your own use. But if you intend to share the call with a third party – for use as evidence in a small claims court, for instance – the failure to explain that you are taping the conversation at the start of the call could lead to a civil prosecution.

however... I think you'd only get into big trouble if you were ordered to stop recording calls and didn't

i must be in here somewhere... http://www.seg.co.uk/telecomm/record.htm (http://www.seg.co.uk/telecomm/record.htm) but tbh i cbf to read it

These scams are as old as the hills, I had calls from people telling me they had buyers lined up when I was selling my MK1 RS2000 and that was 18 years ago. All I did was lead them on saying I was interested, kept them on the phone for ages and let them phone me back loads of times, in the end they realised I was just wasting their time and money and never bothered me again.

i had this a couple of months ago while selling my girlfriends car, it was in the auto trader for 3 weeks, they phoned me on the first week and i told them the car was sold, just to fob them off. then thay had the cheek to phone my girlfriend on the second week asking her why she had not removed the car from the trader, cheeky b**tards! there are so many of these kind of things out there, if they see you have something of value they want it! in my eyes its basically stealing

When they were calling me the guy I was talking to starting trying to push me into signing up with them and after a while he was saying "we've phoned you several times now and as you now phone calls arent cheap" I said "you wrang me and if the cost of calls is so high why have you phoned me back so many times". When the penny dropped and he realised I wasnt gonna give them a penny he asked why I had strung them along for so long, I told him that nobody made him spend all that time on the phone to me and he p!ssed me off so I p!ssed him off in return.

re: recording conversations

I'm pretty sure if you want to use the call in court or anything legal related, you have to declare the recording at the beginning of the conversation and give the agent or whoever an option to either hand you on to a superior or end the call.

Does sound like you were owning her to be honest.. altho she did also sound like she'd heard it all before and had been given BS training

I didn't think the Alpha Starlet part was fair, because she works for the company, she's not a car expert! (Although I had a bit of a laugh at it)

But the rest, sounds like a pure scam.
