how low can i drop my mk1 golf convertable? And whats the biggest size wheels i can get on it without moding the arches etc?

Always an iffy one this, depends on your wheel offset, how much u drop etc. You can slam a Mk1 on the floor if it sits on wide 14 inchers (avoid speed bumbs). I've never believed a Mk1 should have large wheels on it. 17s are possible with mods but look stupid in my opinion , the car looses alot of drivabilty, after all they were built to run on 14s. You can fit 16s and low profiles with little fuss with a hard suspension setup no lower than a 25/30mm drop, but again the handlings skitty as I don't think they like em. More show than anything else. If you still wanna corner like the car wants to, 40/50mm hard drop on a lovely shiney set of 15s shouldn't upset it too much. I've asked a similar question earlier and am looking into coilovers, that way I can change the hight myself if i'm unhappy with it. I'm looking at wide 14/15s though as I don't want the car to loose it's amazing drving character and yet keep the car low. If you do stick massive wheels on ya motor, it will always look like its sitting on Land Rover Running gear! ;D

I had my cab on 17's and dropped 40mm, the ride was ok, but would catch under the rear arches when loaded up. Now it is on 14x8 front and 14x9 rear, with coilovers settling it about 2" above the ground. The handling is awesome, but the ride is quite harsh - down to the choice of coilovers (FK)
It looks fantatsic now, and really turns heads, but I am very limited as to where I can or cant take it.

if i was to stick 16"s on it how low could i go?

40mm with low profiles ;)

im going for 15s as their not too big to look daft, not too small so i can go over speed bumps, up ramps etc and you can still go relavitely low..
obviously you cant have wheels that are as wide...
youve gotta ask yourself the practicality vs exterior question...
Personally i think 16s are too big...

Agreed. 17's on a mk1 are just plain silly, doesn't improve the look at all, 16 arn't far off but the cars height and general appearance still suffers along side the drivability. Slightly wider 15's give you a beefy look with a low height with no compromising. The best look in my opinion is super wide 14's with the car a couple of inches off the floor! But if diameter is ur thing. Then go for 15's. It looks right and drives right. ;)
