Title: Good MPG?
Post by: GavG60 on 29 April 2004, 14:11
my trip computer reckons I'm getting between 14 and 18 mpg around town, and 29-30 on the motorway if I behave mytself (not very often)

is this right for a mk2 16v? (84,000 on the clock)

what is anyone else getting? :-\

(optimax in my local is 84p per litre....costin me a fortune)

Doesn't sound right to me you should be getting more than that. I can get into the 40s on a motorway run. The MFA is either incorrect or you're running a bit rich by the sound of it. You should be getting into nearly mid 20s around town at least. I average about 33 mpg and most of that is around town and on 40 - 60 speed limits.

By the way, mines a mk1 cab but it's a 91 plate.

I haven't seen 40 for a long time! lol
I get 25-30 round town usually.
Got 35/36 on the motorway on monday until I started going over 80mph :) That was running 95RON fuel. it's back on opitmax now.

mine's a 8v though.

is it 16v? ???

Good point ::) No it isn't but I still think you should be a lot closer to my MPG than you are at the moment.

i get a consistant 36-37 mpg in a Mk3 16v on runs out of London and down to sussex coast.  sounds ok given the town/motorway/country split.

my MFA says that my car averages about 17mpg...

It used to tell me it was doing 31mpg which was about right but when it was doing that the clock was counting 1min every 20secs.

I have worked out that I get 27mpg and for my car thats not bad!

My MFA doesn't agree most of the time!

after the car was tuned and serviced i'd see around 43-45mpg at 60. around town it never really dropped much under 28mpg.

i do remember seeing it at 1.6mpg, ahem, but then i did have it maxed out on an autobahn.

one thing i do know is that the sensors seem to start breaking down. mine currently says around 8mpg regardless of what i'm doing, and i know its in the high 30s.

if anyone actually knows where the sensor is, drop us a line :)

tin it works on vacuum, there should be a vacuum line somewhere on the inlet manifold that you can trace to the bulk head, it may have fallen off or something. failing that the mfa could be on the blink ($$$$$$) :o

interesting you say that. cause it has another problem that we think is either a missing vacuum hose or an air leak.

any idea where this hose is?

on an 8v i do its on the right hand side of the inlet manifold, where the brake servo vacuum pipe goes aswell. follw the vacuum pipe from the servo to the inlet manifold and it should be there. hold on let me see if i can find a picture then you can see what im on about

here ya go its an 8v but the principal should be the same

You see that bit i have outlined, the yellow valve in that which is inline in a pipe, well the little vacuum line coming off immediately behind it is the bit that the mfa takes its reading from.

thats on a left hooker, so the brake servo maybe on the other side,if that little pipe isnt connected it can let unmetered air into the engine a cause  dodgy idle etc
