Afternoon / Evening all !
Firstly, I apologise if there is a thread somewhere which covers this, I have yet to spot it.
I will (hopefully very soon - depends how quick my Skyline sells !) be in the market to buy a MKV GTI, and I may ask my local dealer to source me one (looking for an 06, preferably in the gun-metal colour (steel grey ?) within Xenons and the 18" Monza's), but I wondered if there is some kind of buyers guide out there ? Things to look out for when you are buying a 2nd-hand GTI ?
Hopefully the car would be new enough that there is nothing to worry about, but I wanted to check if there are any problem areas to look for when purchasing a GTI.
I drove one a couple of weeks ago and I was impressed with it's all-round capabilities.
Other than that, just a "hello" from a newbie !
Cheers,
Darren

Welcome to the forum.
There are a few of these doing the rounds. Here is the link to the most recent and most comprehensive list of things to check for when buying second hand and on delivery:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=64432.0
Many of the problems with the GTi were solved after 06 so your should not cause any issues.
Steel Grey is a great colour as it hides swirls, and dirt very well. Xenons is a must in my opinion and the Monza's are good.
With regards to monza's you may want to check for "White Worm" on them which will mean a replacement of all four rims for free warranty or not.
Certain engine builds had an issue with a fuel something or other. I cant remember but that you can check on delivery and will be fixed under warranty.
Before buying a second hand motor I would suggest getting VW to bring up the cars history. That way you can find out what has been done to the car, is it an import? Has the car had any major issues etc before buying the car. An example of this is Phil who almost bought an Edition 30 but after checking with VW found that the car was a lemon.
Other than that, push hard for a discount and only accept the car if you are absolutely happy with it.
Im sure I forgot a few things but others can fill in for me.
Happy Driving

Hi folks !
Now I've finally made my mind up on getting a GTI I'm quite keen for the Skyline to sell (never thought I'd say that).
It's only been up for grabs for a week though - so need to be patient (which gives me time to learn about GTI's a bit more).
Some great info on this site by the way....and some lovely looking cars posted up in the picture thread.

Yep - it's a 32 GTR, running just shy of 450hp (and 330-ish ftlb torque).
Haven't really used it properly for the past couple of years (380 miles between the last 2 M.O.T's) so I've decided it's time to move it on and get something that's much newer, I can use on a daily basis and still have a lot of fun in.
I'm also trying to move away from modifications - and the only thing the Golf will be seeing in terms of performance add-ons is a REVO stage 1 setup (because I know I'm going to miss the raw power of the GTR and the REVO might just help me get over it ;) ).
Thanks again for the kind welcomes.

How much for the GTR? Also what year is it? I may know someone who is interested!

Take a look at this thread: http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/101637-immaculate-32-gtr-sale.html
It contains the full details - plus some "endorsements" from people that know the car (including the guy who mapped it who until a couple of months ago, was the mapper at Abbey Motorsport).
Once you've had a read of the thread, if you need more info, feel free to contact me.
Cheers,
Daz

....Then you better immediately put myself, Hurdy, and a few others on your "Ignore" list!!
The Mk5 GTI is a great allrounder. Welcome to the forum!

Great car Daz
But i bet you all the athlete's in china that you will do more mods than you stated if you spend any amount of time on here.
-
Well, the PLAN is not to modify beyond a stage 1 REVO. I'm never going to get near the performance of my Skyline - so I'm just after something I can have some fun in but also something that is a bit more "sensible".
The Skyline is an absolute rocket - and with just short of 440hp I'm never going to get near it. So, what I've decided is to get something pretty new and something I can still enjoy, without throwing money at it like I've done the Skyline (and my previous GTI-R - which was running just over 300hp).
I've put off selling the Skyline for a year - as I truely love the car. But it's sell it now or keep it forever, and I've decided to sell it.
I just hope that I'm making the right decision and that I'll be happy in the GTI. I've driven one...and was impressed, so hopefully I'll be happy.
-
....You just have to enjoy the GTI for what it is and not make too many direct comparisons.
Revo Stage1 will make a big difference...........................But so would a Milltek, AP Racing Big Brake Kit, Suspension mods, Quaife diff....Oh sorry!! I forgot! You don't like mods
-
Heheh !! It's not that I don't like mods, it's just that having modified extensively my previous 2 cars (the GTI-R I owned for 4 years and the Skyline for 5 so far - and both were modified from the off, so 9 years of tuning) I'm trying to move away from that.
Once I've got the GTI and have driven it for a while, then I may find that I want to improve a couple of things (i'm not going to rule it out 100%), but I'm not going to be looking for replacement turbo's and the like. I'd prefer to enjoy the car as standard or with the stage one REVO (if possible......)
