Hey guys
Now please dont slate me but I have been on VW Vortex and I enjoy going through the .:R32 section as there are some really nice cars on there.
I have noticed a trend over the last few months and its rather disturbing. As we only have a few .:R32 owners here their opinion would be appreciated. Before I continue I want everybody to realise this is not a GTi VS .:R32 thread.
But more the way the .:R32 is seen compared to the GTi. It seems that in America the .:R32 is getting a lot of hate. The MK4 guys seriously dislike it and the GTi guys are not exactly being polite.
It seems that the car is not seen as an enthusiest car and that many people are seriously mocking it.
What is the general opinion here? What sort of response do the .:R owners here get?
In my opinion it is a lovely car. It looks mint, probably drives mint too.

I love all Golfs *group hug*
The MKIV R32 and MKV R32's are lovely cars and that V6 sound is glorious. The urge from the engine is all that lets it down IMHO. If only they had squeezed another 50bhp out of it, it would have been a legendary car
A standard 300bhp 4WD golf R32 would have earned my money.....even over my ED30
-
Same here I'm a general all round Golf fan, I own 2 of them.
If I could justify the purchase I would have a mk4 R32 Turbo conversion over the mk5 as I prefer the styling, looks a bit more purposeful. The Mk5 is a great car though, just a bit expensive and could do with more power.
-
Agreed, I always thought my standard MK4 was a bit of a sluggish, heavy lump. Sounded fantastic though, still miss that noise, the GTI just doesn't come close. The MK5 looks gorgeous IMO, still not totally convinced with the silver snout and lack of fogs, but the rear is   Like Hurdy said, if the MK5 had come with 300bhp out the box then I would definately be driving round in one today!
-
agreed, i find it abit dumb that a 3.2 engine only has 250hp??? when you get other car brands with 3.2-3.6 engines over 350bhp,
if the r had 50 extra hp then it would have been my choice of car aswell
-
just not a fan of how the front looks but the rest of it isn't too shabby at all

Word Hurdy, fully agree it needs more power.

And you wonder why I like my Audi's...

And you wonder why I like my Audi's...
Audis are good cars, I have had 4 from brand new. A3 1.8T, TT225, A3 3.2 and B7S4. I've never understood though people who write reviews that say they feel wooly and dont have any feedback through the steering, or feel fast? They are a quality built and well designed with a good choice of engines. An S4 on full song aroung the "Ring" give you all the feedback you need, with a soundtract to match!
The only reason I'd avoid the R32, is with the blue brakes calipers, extra styling bits, mid exhaust etc it looks a bit "in your face", nothing wrong with that if its what you like, but sometimes you just want to slip by unnoticed!
I test drove some before chosing the GTI, it was similar to the A3 3.2 I owned but better as it was 5 door. Wife didnt like it, but hey!

I am still in love with the B6 Audi A4 3.0 Litre Quattro...
Its such a beast and so much fun. I think that VW sort of created the MK5 .:R32 just to please the MK4 guys. Which over in America ect has not worked.
I think for the extra money you are not getting much more.
This is all my opinion. I would never slate an .:R32 unless its on stilts and the driver is a C*nt.

I don't hate the R32 - it just does not push my buttons. Its weird how the top spec Golf with the "R" badge is not head and shoulders above its "lesser" siblings.
As said above, it really needs 300bhp + to be taken seriously.
-
I obviously love it as I did the mk4 .:R too! For me its the fact that its subtle doesnt really stand out (unless you want to). Wouldn't agree with anything those yanky tw4ts living in the great depression say
Although on paper you might say that it needs an extra 50 bhp... I would say you need to live with one before you just look at the 250bhp figure. It handles this figure with no drama what so ever, never struggles to put its power down and doesnt suffer from understeer if you know how to drive it. Full with passengers or empty, down or uphill makes very little difference to the performance. Its very easy to live with and your passenger dont need a neck brace to sit with you when you pushing on. Obviously with the AWD it takes a little from the fun factor but definately adds to its ability... a compromise well worth it i would say.
I know many of you question why only 250bhp from the 3.2 v6 like myself. Well I hate to say it but its down to audi!! VW will never be allowed to be better that its older brother... simple as that for me.
The down side?? simple... those nobb jockeys we apparently vote for every now and then. Fuel prices are simply crippling and killing the R32 and other big engined cars unless your well off enough to not flinch at the costs. On the positive side I recently managed a reasonable 28mpg average over a full tank, which is very good from a 3.2 by any standard... before you all ask, no i didnt drive like a granny!! Even managed to see off a few motors too
I think I might even do a full (and honest) write up of 1 years ownership next month...

....I've driven modded Mk4 R32's, a standard Mk5 .:R and a friend's APS Stage3 Mk5 R32 DSG with Haldex. They all feel a bit heavier than the GTI but are a great car and a gloriously addictive V6 soundtrack, especially with Milltek.
I love them!
-
i also drove a manual Mk5 R, and it felt it had no urgentcy about it, great sound track, loved it also having a sunroof which ive never had, which made the soundtrack sound even nicer in the sunshine. But it wasnt enough to make me go "must have it" if you know what i mean. i hope something special in the Mk6 R if there will ever be such a thing, and that VW follow Ford and Renault raising the performance benchmark lately.

i loved my r32 and it sounded the dogs nuts when i put an exhaust on it, i would have had another if they had done it in white  its a great car and is such a well planted car but maybe could have done with a few extra ponies but that can always be sorted

now that you havedriven a ED30 would you still swap for another R32 if available in white nice car by the way.
-
if i had the cash to add a turbo hell yes  but then again i love my ed30
-
I looked at an R32 but didn't like the image they have or the fuel / tax issues .... + I liked the looks of the Edition 30, so bought one
I know what the 4wd system is like though and miss that and the soundtrack ! Still, I look forward in due course to making the Edition 30 have urge an R32 owner would have to spend thousands to replicate
-
....The review I posted got wiped in the site's HD failure, SO8, but I recently drove a friend's Mk5 R32 APS Stage3 with Haldex in Race mode back-to-back with another friend's VW Racing road legal 290 bhp GTI with Quaife diff and WOW!! The R32's 'AWD' gripped well but the tyres squealed and the body rolled (only a little), but the GTI was planted flat and as if on rails!! Both were DSG with AP brakes and Milltek, but that V6 soundtrack is glorious! You just can't equal that sound advantage.

I do know what you mean ... I came from a TVR Griffith to an Edition 30 - which soundtrack wise is quite a change ...
-
....TVR's make a sound to die for!! One of the very best imo.
