Title: DV Valve
Post by: pridders on 30 July 2008, 11:06
Hi All,

As some of you may have read I have recently had the Stage 1 Revo fitted and I am very impressed. Jim at JKM has told me that the boost psi is slightly lower than he would like and will be affecting the BHP. He said this could be caused by slight damage to the DV valve and would need to check it to be sure. Unfortunately I would have had to wait a couple of hours to have them check it out and I needed to go. I now need to get the old one off to check it and may as well replace it with a new stock DV valve. Jim has also said that sometimes the psi can be down and nothing to do with the DV valve but the ECU sorts it out over a couple of weeks. He could not explain why just cleaver engineering/electronics on the cars these days.

Anyone else had this problem? To be honest it doesn't feel like its lacking any power and cant imagine what it will be like if I get some more!

Anyone know the part number for a stock DV valve? I think there about £30?

If you're taking it off anyway, might aswell upgrade to a Forge one that uses a piston instead of a crappy plastic diaphragm

hey mate, get the forge valve, its much stronger than the OE one. I was lacking boost, 8psi to be exact but i dont think youl be that bad  i had split hoses on my dv. then my car wasnt boosting past 5krpm so re-flashed the ecu and put a new map on and everything is sorted.

did JKM  say how much boost you were loosing? probs wont be the dv as when they go or split you would defo know about it

I can highly recommend the Forge DV, amongst lots of other mods on my motor

....The stock DV is well known as a potentially weak link, especially on remapped GTI's. A friend has been through 3 stock DV's on his MY04 GTI. The Forge DV is very robust and also holds boost better I'm told. JKM fitted mine - It's tricky because of where it's located.

How easy is the fitting on an ED30 John Hurdy? Obviously located in an easier location, but just wondered whether it was a garage or DIY job?

I had it fitted at Awesome and they put it on in 30 mins. You have to take off the engine cover to get the piping fitted, but it is miles easier than the standard GTI. I'd definitely fit my own next time. Forge even have a download on their site for fitting and tips  - you just have to ignore where they want to fit it as it is for the standard GTI location.

guy at jkm said to me they are not necessary for ed30 as the valve is located in a dif place, stock one works perfectly well, only on normal gti's as the location of it becomes to hot so needs changing.

I have emailed forge to ask, I think there used to be a standard 10% discount offer for uk mkiv forum members so we might be able to get something like this.

I ran standard 1 in my ED30 for a few thousand miles running stg2 with no problems, only changed to the forge one as a precaution for the rolling road day we had( who did get the best figures that day ) but the standard 1 looked fine when removed, in fact I've kept it for a spare for my S3, think there the same?
Title: Re: DV Valve
Post by: RedRobin on 31 July 2008, 18:04
....It's not guaranteed that anyone will have problems with the stock DV, whether the car is remapped or not. But VW have already revised it three times which should tell us something because even some standard cars have failed. It's an Achilles Heal or weak link but you might never have a problem with the stock DV - It's 50-50.

Post by: gazbutmk5gti on 31 July 2008, 19:43
I deffinately think you are more likely to get problems with the regular GTi's DV with it being in the 'hotzone' bolted directly to the turbo, and with the valve being made mainly of plastic and rubber things were never perfect. I had issues on my first GTi after 1000miles of remap action

Just had a reply from Forge, for single orders if you quote which forum you are from and your username they will apply 10% discount to your order.

Alteratively if 20 people are interested then they would consider offering a special group buy price.

I've modded my K03 mounted DV to the front mounted DV location using the OEM ED30/S3 parts.  Seems to be working ok on the stock DV, also being at the front it is much more accessible for checking.

How much did that little conversion cost Stu?
