Title: 2.turb00000000000000000000
Post by: iMation on 30 July 2008, 08:20
Right let me start off by saying that this IS the route i am going, regardless i know people will say get a 1.8t and sell the 2.0, well no, simple reason, i like the 2.0 its solid and has SOME potential!

And the fact that the Mrs wants a TT next year :S

So at castle combe i was describing that a american company called Kinetics do a Turbo kit for the 2.0 snails, (American engines are AEG for the mk4 and ABA for the mk3)

http://www.kineticmotorsport.com/products/KINETIC_MOTORSPORT_MKIV_2_0L_STAGE1_TURBO_KIT-864-257.html (http://www.kineticmotorsport.com/products/KINETIC_MOTORSPORT_MKIV_2_0L_STAGE1_TURBO_KIT-864-257.html)

With a  few other mods i can easy get 200 out of this sucker :D (zorst, cat, 2mm head gastket etc..)

The only downside is if i want high boost i need to change my clutch but i think mine is on its way out anyways so not a problem.

and the fact that Nick at R-Tech is gonna be a busy man giving me a custom remap :D

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3272469&page=1 (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3272469&page=1)

Here is a list of people that have done the upgrade being it self sourced or self build or even the kit from kinetics. Alot of good info and data on Vortex forums for this project.

I have already got the delivery sorted due to a nice block at RAF fairford who is going to get his family to GIFT it over her :D:D

This is on the cards for XMAS.

Definatly mate, im really looking forward to getting my teeth into this. while the engine is being worked on im gonna tidy up the bay some, so its nice and shiney :D

I have spoken to Kinetics today and they said that i will get a cut price due to not using there software :D ideal as im sure the custom remap is gonna cost me some :D

Im sure if i had the fabrication skills that i could source the bits and do this my self, but i dont so...

The thing is, its out there, the good old yanks are adventurouse and try these things.

a bit of research is all thats needed.

Yes people are right by saying 1.8t is the better option for tuning and performance.

if like me you want to keep the strong engine of the 2.snail then i think its worth throwing the money at it.

Now, that REALLY would be different!!

Yes mate, i was originally going to go this route, i spoke to CCR-Racing a while back and they would do me a stage one Rotrex SC kit with 1.8t stock intercooler for just shy of 3k (with postage and tax and stuff) but then i would also have to pay for a custom remap and manufacture a bracket for the SC. but it would still only push 185 BHP for that money. obviously if i did other things to lower the compression then  would get more.

Post by: Ivor Mk4 Turbo on 12 August 2008, 19:17
Mmmmmmmmmmm, that does seem a lot of dollar/effort to get to 185.

Are you looking to spend about 3k then?  What kind of power you hoping for with the turbo?

How about buying a rear ended S3 & nick the whole front off it??  You'd have everthing then - Lump, downpipe, plumbing, uprated brakes etc, etc.

Could have a Golf S3 but without the downside of the weight of the 4WD system?? :smug:

in total im looking to spend about 2.5kish

from the turbo im looking at about 180 at the wheel with a custom remap, maybe more depending but i think the best ive seen is 250 thats with new cams and rods.

that would be awsome to do a mk5->4 conversion

more specifically

now things are getting interesting especially as I have a refurbished T3 sat at my dads from my Zetec Turbo engine :-)

Title: Re: 2.turb00000000000000000000
Post by: kniterider on 21 August 2008, 21:48
tis easy... you get piggy back units that fit between the oil filter and the block.... or they could be using a more hardcore way of getting oil...., tis normally done from a piggy back then through a seperate cooler then to the turbo then back to the sump... engines are easy and if youve got you head screwed ont here not that hard to work out how to do what... yeah theres money involved but some people love there cars and engines.... (ive had mk4 gti's and audi 20vt's etc) but im back to a mk3 vr6, cause i love the noise and power delivery why the funk didnt vw uk put these in as fwd as they did in the american golf gti mk4?? lol... id be a happy as f00k person then!!

anyways, i looked into ways of tuning my n/a 20'v gti , and other than fitting carbs and a diffo ignition system the turbo option was the only way, so by turboing or chargin the 2.0 snail as you call it is something youll get noticed for , which as ive always said 'take a break from the norm' .... the vw 'scene' is great but it gets boring after youve been in it for so long... (well i have ) so to see some thing fresh some one to throw some cash at is all good!! regardless of what performance figures it kicks out at the end... there scope for more!!

TBH i dont think im gonna buy any kits but that is another great link

Ive managed to source so far

Oil catch tank
Green injectors
Fast Flow Sports Cat
TIAL 38mm wastegate

I think the only things i will be spending good money on is the Turbo.

I think im gonna have a shot at fabricating myself a manifold making equal length pipes

thats about it for now :D

well been busy reading very suprised at how many americans have done the mod, only thing i did notice is some of the 2.0 had the exhaust manifold at rear of engine (bulk head end) while others were at the front, where is your exhaust manifold? mine is at rear, although would be a lot easier to do if in front, when you planning on starting the conversion imation

cant decide think it may be a risk to turbo my engine as it already has 106k on it, not a lot but could be when adding pressure from turbo, plus i fancy big power like 225BHP

im looking to get at least 250 from the turbo, as for the manifold, mine is on the arse end :D. the AEG engine is the closest to ours the aba was the mk3 version i believe.

just ordered a header spacer.

was at Ed38 today in the pissing rain and spotted piper cams and asked them about cam for the 2.0. Also said about making a equal length manifold, good news if i manage it lol

im hoping to pick up a t3/t4 turbo next week some time :D:D:D:D
