Title: The mk1 tin-top is going to have to go........but how?
Post by: richandhazel on 30 July 2008, 03:38
I've lost my second garage, where I have been storing the cabriolet and loads of mk1 parts, bits and bobs. Unfortunately the guy I was hiring it from needed it back. It's a good thing in a way as I needed a kick up the ar*e to get things sorted.

As a result I have finally decided that the mk1 tin-top has got to go. I started stripping it down last year (engine, gearbox and a few ancillaries removed) but then things came up and it went back to being moth-balled. I haven't decided exactly what I'm going to do yet.

For those that don't know, I originally acquired the car for spares for the cabriolet. Unfortunately when I got it home, I realised that the shell was far too good to scrap. It has then sat in the corner of the garden with half hearted attempts made here and there to tackle it. It has deteriorated a little whilst here but without a good look underneath etc., I can't be sure if the shell is still good enough. I would imagine it would be as it was solid with no serious rot, just a little surface corrosion here and there. All the usual places were suprisingly solid! The interior is superb and would probably sell for enough on ebay to recover all costs that it owes me.

My inclination is to break it for spares, but it just seems such a shame to do that. Would anyone then be interested in the shell? Should I try and sell it as a going concern? Decisions..............

................Just wondered what your ideas are and what you would do.

Some of the underneath..........these look a lot worse than they are, it really is only surface corrosion:-

I've taxed worse.

Nick

Nick,

I have worked on a lot worse that are still 'onroad'. One of the best examples I have come across that haven't been 'attacked'. I so wish I had the time.............

The trouble is, it will only degrade in the corner of my garden and it is such a waste of a good car

Mate if I had the money and storage I'd have it off you in a second, alway wanted a MKI and a white one would be awesome!

Hopefully someone will take it whole and get it back on the road.

The whole interior is coming out before it goes to Chris as he doesn't need it

Any bits that I can't use on the cabriolet will be going onto ebay in the not too distant future.

If for any reason Chris doesn't take it, you're next on the list.
I'm not after anything for it other than a good home. I could get £70 at the scrap yard but its too good for that and my love for Mk1's wouldn't allow it
