Title: Chipping discussion...!
Post by: richy on 28 April 2004, 21:44
Kniterider and I were discussing here...

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=8;action=display;threadid=8649&start=20

...how easy/not it is to get extra power from the 1.8 20v (NA).  I've just had a look on Upsolute.com, and they quote post-chipping figures of 137bhp and 148lb/ft for this engine i.e. an increase of 12bhp (about 10%) and 23lb/ft extra torque.  This is for chipping alone - no other mods.

I have had no prior experience of chip-tuning - Are upsolute any good, or are these claims unrealistic?

Rich.

http://www.upsolute.com/eng/index.html

It says 365 euros including fitting. (about ?225 I think).

CCCTech are the distributor for the UK http://www.ccctech.co.uk/chiptuning.php?make=Volkswagon

that funny .. upsolute chip bora 1.8 20v 138bhp and golf 1.8 20v 137bhp one less horse power even same engine  ???
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: richy on 28 April 2004, 22:30
Wouldn't worry about 1bhp!  Probably exhaust is different or something.
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: rac_gti on 28 April 2004, 22:30
doe AMD chip same bhp provide as upsolute 12 bhp extra ?
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: richy on 28 April 2004, 22:34
not sure.

AMD don't list the 1.8 NA, only the 1.8T
http://www.auto-amd.com/mk4.asp

However, they do mention the Audi A3 1.8 (same engine), but don't give the exact gain.  I expect it's similar.

Apparantly jabbasport are good, but their website is down right now

Nope, mine pulls pretty strong + steady all the way to 6000.  Not blistering, but steady.  Optimax helps  ;D

Hey - fuel consumption goes DOWN with upsolute (higher mpg)
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: rac_gti on 28 April 2004, 22:50
yeah it doe .. better fuel return with upsolute
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: richy on 28 April 2004, 22:50
Shell Optimax petrol costs about 2-3p a litre more.
Its 98RON as opposed to 95RON for normal petrol (i.e. higher octane). It also has cleaning agents in it to help your engine run smoooooooth :)

Been using it for a few months now (whenever I can find a Shell garage).  Had a steady improvement ever since first tank.

This thread is just a blue Mk4 convention!

*jv barges in*

what about good old superchips?

http://www.superchips.co.uk/curves/vw1820v.pdf

seem to not have the reputation anymore since revo/apr/jabba etc kicked in. might be worth a look
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: rac_gti on 28 April 2004, 23:07
Hi jv nice have u join along .. yeah been thought abt superchip a while back but it not been mention alot !
That weird ,, it says the 1.8 20v standard 129bhp so therefore a superchip add 7bhp to total 136 !  ???
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: golfvr6 on 28 April 2004, 23:24
As a general rule a chip will add about 10% on most cars  ;)
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: kniterider on 29 April 2004, 11:50
let me know what you find out peeps, if there is a proven gain (with graphs etc to back it up)i would prob consider splashin another ?200 at the mk4 to get 10bhp for just a chip, as i have a induction kit on all read would just be a case of exhaust then, but to be honest this new 16vr of mine is rather fast so if i want quickness i jump in that now!! ;D

Check out that link to Superchips on Jv's response.

The extra horsepower is only available at very high revs, but look at that extra low-end torque!  :D

Post by: gazzagtiT on 30 April 2004, 00:19
Not bad for turbo either upsolute, 20-30% gain thats a min 180bph for ?345 its either that or the trusty old revo for ?500 but then i'd get 196bhp!!!
decisions decisions!!!! ???

As a general rule a chip will add about 10% on most cars  ;)

Don't agrea with that, some cars it will add absoloutley nothing in BHP, but it will change the characteristis of the power graph.  About 4 yrs ago i got my Fiesta si 1.6 zetec chipped, the dyno runs showed that the bhp ncreased by only 3 bhp, but the car seemed to rev all the way up to 7500rpm where as before it only went to 6000.  Chips only really seem to give massive noticable power gains on forced induction engines.
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: golfvr6 on 30 April 2004, 23:53
I did only say most cars mate  ;)
10% isn't exactly a huge increase anyway, obviously chipping will be better with forced induction as the turbo boost is cranked up.

Right .. the bloke from upsolute have got back to me with details.
Here what he send to me

Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your enquiry.

Please find attached the figures for your vehicle.

The fully inclusive cost of the upgrade is ?275, I can travel to you to carry out the work which takes approx 2 hours.

As well as the attached performance increase you will also see an improvement in the responsiveness of the vehicle and the pick up at lower revs.  You should see a slight increase in fuel economy, but to be honest this will be quite small ? especially if you use the extra power at your disposal often !

the attachment show a increased bhp from 125 to 137bhp.
so wot u think ? i am tempt to go ahead and have it chipped
so would it be best if i go to roller road find out the bhp before have it chipped and find ou after as well.

yeah sounds good to me, if i can get my 20v up and running again and give it a month to check reliability status etc im prettuy sure im might be up for that, im also gonna purchase a 2nd hand down pipe (as the manifold is tublar for max gasflow on these anyway) and remove the cat and make it a straight through fitment without the cat (but making a entry point for any cat sensor needed) and see how it goes cause on other brand of cars ive had when the cat has been removed the power levels have gone up straight away as they seem to strangle the gases on the way out!!

Gaz .. yeah i was thinking of doing that as well .. get more flowing without cat .. but not sure how much will it sent us back for down pipe and de-cat ... i could alway find out if i can !
But even thought it a bother to have it put back on for mot time innt ?
Title: Re:Chipping discussion...!
Post by: richy on 10 May 2004, 13:50
Don't you need a cat for the MOT to pass?  When my exhaust packs in, I'm getting a Milltek  ;D
