Title: Center Console re-spray
Post by: Ridg on 27 May 2008, 12:06
i decided that i'd respray my interior trim as i wanted to match it with the car exterior, and it would allow for the R-line gear knob.

bascially the wood trim was rubbed down with 600 grit wet and dry, primed, sprayed with relex silver, sprayed with lacquer (no rub down between paint and clear coat), rubbed the lacquer down with 1200 grit and applied a final coat or lacquer.

just a notes regarding the spraying, for the base paint, for each layer i made 1 pass always in the same direction (this tip i got got from leeroy)

Adding the lacquer adds depth the the paint straight away and give you a nice smooth finish too, heres the result.

was my first time with rattle cans, most of its pretty straight forward, i was lucky as i used a spare room in the office to do everything this meant i didn't have to worry about dust, cat hairs etc, i did had to redo a couple of the pieces (lacquer had run or i'd not left it cure long enough), but really pleased with the final result, and should go well with an R32 steering wheel

the heater control surround just pulls off, same with the OBD port cover, the cup holder is held in by 2 spring clips (so a small flat head can be used to pry that out), ash tray is a torx screw.

the hard ones are the edge strips as they have a securing pin, i managed to carefully get them off with a flat head screw driver, but you have to be careful, removing the rest of the trim (glove box, steering wheel surround) so that you can get to the cage is recommended, but not necessary (obviously if you break them don't blame me )

Think i'll have a go at this
Did you buy the paint or did you already have it, how much would i be looking to spend on getting the right primer, lacquer etc? What primer and lacquer did you use??
i've just got some wet and dry form egay 20 assorted grits  £3.60. :afro:
I dont have an OBD port cover  why??
would this still work on the standard black trim?
I'm a tight ass and if i do this in silver there will be half a tin of silver on flea gay after
unless i can find something else to spray silver....

i started doing them, but hadn't masked the finger plate properly and ended up spraying part of the rubberised surface silver so just swapped them out for the standard, with the intention of sorting it later. below are a couple of pics of what the handles i finished look like.

dubbz, i got pretty much everything from halfords, primer, silver reflex paint, lacquer, assorted wet and dry.  I bought 2 of each, but you could probably do it with 1 as i was planning to do the door handles too.

in addition to the paint i bought some gloves, masking tape and breathing mask from wilko

can't see any reason why it wouldn't work on the standard black, you just need to rub it down to a surface you can bind the primmer to.

yeah just a shame i fooked up the finger plate, if i can find a second hand one, i'll re-do it as i doubt the over spray is going to come off without damaging the rubberised bit, plan was to just spray the wood part of it.

re paint codes, i used the spray cans, so literally bought the off the shelf reflex silver, if you've got a gun then you would need them at which point you'll have to ask someone else lol
