Right guys, I am already annoyed with the lack of volume from my rcd500...so I'll be looking at a new stereo.
I'll probably plump for the pioneer AVH-P4000DVD, when funds permit!

What is my best option for a fascia adapter...I dont want an ill-fitting and colour matched halfords job!

the adaptor is going to look aftermarket, they tend to look a bit awkward whatever you do, its the reason i went for the rns510, stereo looks ok but im not sure about the silver knob !

Once my Kenwood DNX 7200 was in I found that the clarity of the speakers worse than before I had the head unit fitted. This was due to the fact that VW headunits use DSP (digital sound processing) to control the volume of the speakers at certain frequencies as the standard speakers are very poor at sound handling.
The only way past this was to rip out all the standard speakers and fit a decent aftermarket set up.
I ended up going for 3 way Hertz "hi-energy" components in the front, Hertz "hi-energy" coax's in the rear and Hertz "hi-energy" 10" sub in the rear. The sub and front components were then hooked up through a 4 way amp. The doors and boot were thoroughly dynamatted for good measure.
The sound of this system is truly marvellous. The separation and clarity throughout the whole range of frequencies and volume is magical. Far better in my opinion than just about any standard set-up that a mainstream manufacturer would put in (yes, better than a Bose system).

Yeah true, I just wondered whether there was one which is better than others sort of thing! Yeah the silver knob would stand out a bit..being polished, but at least the colours of the other buttons can be changed.
@ Hurdy
Cheers for the advice, that hadn't occured to me (obv!)
I was purely looking at the power outputs of both 20w x 4 standard compared to 40w x 4 of the pioneer, which of course does not have any bearing on the sound quality.
I'll save up some monies first I think then consider the switch.

I had Bose in my S4 and thats just about the sound quality I'd like to get in my GTI. Hurdy what would you recommend as an upgrade, as the sound from my standard RCD300 and speakers isnt great? I'd like to keep the car looking OEM and no subwoofer in the boot, would just using your speakers in place of the standards cut the mustard?

are the speakers fitted like they were in the MK4?
