Title: My Mk3 Golf Gti 8V
Post by: Wayne on 24 May 2008, 21:17
Always had Vauxhalls or Fords to be honest but whilst looking for a car got offered this 1996 8V Gti with a genuine 55k from new with full vag history but needing a clutch cable and a clean.

Next step, cleaned and polished, rear wiper and spoiler removed, black vw badges, red gti badge, vr6 lower spoiler, new plates and replaced the mirrors as damaged.

New wheels next, took ages to find the ones I wanted as no longer made.

As she is at the moment with hotuning coilovers fitted plus another set of number plates, cannot drop it any further as need to get over speed bumps where I live.

Future plans are Vento front end conversion. different rear lights and maybe a leather interior.

Let me know what you think, I know it is not the most modified one around but I am well happy with it.

Update: have been looking at getting the roof resprayed due to some marks but came up with a cheaper option, after a few photoshops and speaking to the signwriter come up with a plan so had this done a few days ago, I like it but know that some people won't.

I had a spare afternoon today so gave it a quick clean plus took the rear coilovers done another 10threads plus the front by about 3threads, went for a drive tonight and did a few more shots.

Over the last week and a bit have done the following, cut and grind back both rear arches plus seal and paint as required, refit all the bodykit including the sideskirts, CL / base model full plastic bumpers, smoked front inds plus self tinted fogs.

Today I fitted a red strip in the bumper plus side mouldings, cleaned and polished, went for a drive and took yet more pictures.

i think it looks good matey, alot better now you have the arches back on, the red pin strip looks good with the checked roof thang..and the fogs looks good too..

Arches / side skirts lasted 2 days, front ones fell off after being hit by the wheels so took it all back off, also fitted smoked towing eye covers to the front as nobody liked my self tinted ones.

Cleaned again this afternoon, let me know what you think.

i think it looked much meaner with the arches on, and i liked the fogs you did, they just needed the indicators yellow to match...

think the roof would look better if it was black and white

Also spent 3hours today removing the roof decal, tooks ages to get the glue remains off.

No point in colour coding the grill to be honest as it is close enough and would a waste of money matching it to the car, rear lights are being changed this week.

why did you get the decal done and how much did it cost?

Was done by a local signwriting company, would cost around £70, got bored of it in the end.

Best bet is to a few local signwriting companys and see what they say, the one we use was not too keen on doing mine but came out all ok but as I sad earlier I just got bored of it in the end.

No they measured the roof and then we planned it etc, a week later he fitted it took him around a 1hr which is 2hrs less than it took me to remove it.

I like the 17"s but they rub on the rear arch even after trimming them back, thinking of getting Porsche D90's or Mk4 alloys maybe.

I changed them to CL versions, my std bumpers were in very poor state and was a cheaper option at the time than respraying what I had plus could not find any in my colour.

I am running CL side trims, bumpers plus mirrors and have also picked up this week a boot handle (mine is cracked) so will nearly be all CL spec soon.

Quick question for you mate.. was it hard to take the spoiler off, i wanna do this but dont know where to get the plugs from?

Easy to do, open the tailgate and you will see 3 nuts and you will or should find covers over the nuts, remove the covers and keep safe, remove spoiler then if you turn the covers over they will push back through the glass and blank the holes, I am looking at getting a CL screen soon for mine with out the spoiler holes.

Quick update, been playing with the coilovers and dropped the front some more.

Plans for the future, 1) refit the bodykit (skirts/arches), 2) sell it maybe and have a play with a 16v next or 3) leave as it and go slighty bonkers including vento front and sort the paintwork issues plus new wheels.

That's where I started, then added a thread here and forgot about projects... but then i wanted a clean build thread so have now updated so they are both in line, its great cos the whole project is in 9 pages instead of 90.  And with bens download option I can have a nice printed copy without all the chat... trying to find old yet important stuff in your dub rides thread can be a pain in the ass!.. people do look in projects, mine got busy since it was up to date and as said, it's easier to see the transformation without all the chat!
