How much shall i lower it with 17'' alloys

Low profile tyres I presume?

As much as it will allow with at least 10mm - 15mm gap

Hi,

In my personal opinion 17's would look great, but you will have a performance sacrifice. If you lower your golf to much you will have tire rub on the fenders, which as you guessed, isn't a good thing. 16's however is a different story.

Get 16" or 15". Much easier to manage and will not lose performance.

to answer your question, i dont think you'd have much trouble with -30mm or -40mm, if you're using 205R17/40 tyres or similar

apparently -40mm is best for handling as the wishbones sit horizontal or something... :undecided:

with low profiles on wheels that size, expect no creature comforts.

40MM max & with 16's - a good compromise. Ive got mine @ that with 17's. It drove so much better with 15's!!!

i would recommend 15" alloys like the others said.

and about lowering it. well lower it until you feel confortable on how it drives.
Its about how it drives and not how it looks on my ocasion.
