Title: My dream of getting a new GTI... can you help?
Post by: em20 on 23 May 2008, 13:27
Hi

Like many ppl on here I've lurked in the background, but finally I'm looking at getting myself a mk 5 golf!!  (after months and months of drooling over them!!)

I was looking at spending around £18k on a second hand motor, but I'm quite specific with what extra's I want and am finding it difficult sourcing one.  I was told by a dealer last year that they can't do deals on brand new cars, however, from readding various posts on here it seems you can!!  (I am a girl, so dealers do try and take the mick!!)

I've configured my dream car and it comes to £23k, what sort of discount do you think is reasonable.  I'm thinking of £20k - but is this too much??

Emma

I doubt you'll coax a 15% discount out of even the most accommodating dealer. What spec are you after?

Oh and welcome

I'm after 3dr, manual, metallic black, with 18'' Monzas, Leather seats (altho now std if I get a new one), Cruise control, centre arm rest, parking sensors and electric folding wing mirrors

That is rather particular.. is your heart absolutely set on black? I know of a white one for sale that matches the rest of your spec perfectly and it looks stunning.

I can think of several ways in which a woman could get that sort of discount. Ohhh I'm in such a childish mood this afternoon.

Welcome to the forum Emma, black does look stunning when its cleaned and polished, but its very very hard to keep clean. A layer of dust just seems to form on it which doesnt happen on any other colour. As said, looks brilliant when clean and really compliments the red on the honeycombe grill (I've got a black one so dont think I'm slagging it off lol).

That one that topher has found looks spot on and in great knick, you know what they are saying these days, white is the new black. . .

Happy hunting

You can normally get a great discount on one that is coming from the dealership stock network, if you are placing a factory order though with a specific specification then you might struggle.

For example I paid under £19k for mine - brand new March 1st 08 plate - red, 18" Monzas, centre arm rest, privacy glass. Cruise control can be retro-fitted cheaply, leather is now standard as you say ... so spec'd up that's a lot more cash at £23k for parking sensors and electric mirrors!

Good luck with the hunt

Where abouts in Kent you from? I picked up mine from VW Maidstone, chap called Dave Catchpole was really helpful, might be worth giving him a bell if your near that area and see what they have?

Tell him that young Alan who bought the black GTi the other month sent you, never know, I might get some comission lol :D

That's the Leicester dealership, which is where I got mine from earlier in the thread. I would recommend them but see if they will budge on the price as mine was £1k less for the same spec in Red.

2003 MG ZR 1.4 +, had it from new.  In glasses guide trade price is almost £3k, they're offering £2.1

Ask em for £2.5 for your car and £500 off the Golf. They'll farm your car off to auction anyway so £400 won't make any difference. If they won't do that (they should) then ask what deals they can do you.

Yeah I said that if he could budge on either I'd put a deposit down there and then, but no joy!  He's going to try and get a better price for my part ex, but is not back in till wednesday, so going to try and not get my hopes up

Sounds like they are hoping for someone to come in and pay full price over the bank holiday weekend. Fingers crossed for you.

Hello em

you could try broadspeed http://www.broadspeed.com/volkswagen/golf-2-0-t-fsi-200ps-gti-3-door-8695.shtml

your spec from factory would be £20700

I recently used them to purchase my ed30

I had no px so im not sure what kind of px you could get

broadspeed search uk dealers willing to offer discounts on factory cars. just depends how close you are to the dealer offering the best deal!

Mo

or for a bit more, one of these http://www.broadspeed.com/volkswagen/golf-2-0-t-fsi-230ps-gti-pirelli-3-door-21193.shtml :lipsrsealed:

Bit far away for you,  but I got a decent part ex from these guys when buying my current ED 30 :

http://www.allbrandsnew.com/search_results2.asp?sid=75575&van=C

It would be a euro import with full 2 year VW warranty, better check about the leather as standard though.

If you would like I can get a trade only HPI check done on your MG which will also give you bang up to date prices from CAP, Glass's and HPI themselves. This may give you a better indication of what your car is worth, and you may be able to use it as a bargaining tool.

I've got the Glasses guide at work and this said that my car was worth £3k trade, are there other sources to get prices from then??

Unfortunately I'm working over the bank holiday weekend, so will have a look into what I could get through the other links everyone has given me.

Gotta say thanks to everyone for helping me out!!  Didn't expect this much of a response

Good luck on your search.

Work on at least 10% discount for your GTI. I think £20k is optimistic but, you have to start somewhere.

I managed 10% on the Pirelli Edition despite the dealer saying that they wouldnt discount. I also got a decent price on the part ex. Remember that they normally value your car first. So if you dont like what they are offering then say so - but remember not to tell them how much you have to spend until the final negotiating stage.
My bargaining worked like this
1. In my head I thought my car was worth £13.5k (2 year old GTI standard with lowish miles - depreciating at £3.5k each year from new and worth 50% of retail at 3 years).
2. Nowadays 10% should be possible unless the dealer has already sold plenty of the model. So list for Pirelli was £23k meaning I was looking at £21k or £7.5k to change.
3. £7.5k to change was in my head do not divulge this figure to the dealer. When salesman first came back out his cost to change was £9k! I told him politely to stop wasting my time and asked for the manager that he had been going to see to come out as well. Keep it amicable not nasty.
4. I again asked for the best price that they could give and if they didnt get near the figure in my head then I would be walking (or driving up to the next nearest dealer). This time the manager went straight to £8k.
5. Advised him he was incredibly close but, I still couldnt deal at that price. This is when you know that they want to do a deal and they know you do to! This is where taking things off like paint protection (managed to get mine still free!) come in and you can use to get those last few £Â£ off and your free tank of fuel and any extras like mats or roof rack.

Dont be afraid to get up if you dont like the deal and say you want to think some more. We nearly went for some lunch in between negotiations but, they were eager to deal and didnt want us to leave.

Finally dont forget that if you buy your Golf before 30 June get the 3 years servicing for £200 - dealer didnt mention this to me until I spotted it in a brochure on his desk. Although it is meant to be for cars regd before 30 June they let me have it anyway!
