Title: poor headlight output

hi can anyone help please? i have a 79 bug and the headlights are poor think they suffer same as mk1 any ideas thanks .

can you uprate the loom in order to take stronger bulbs? as i know mk1s can't run uprated bulbs on a standard loom, think it fries :)

my lights got really crap as my battery was gradually dying.. i had an alternator issue though.
