....Well, you have to admit it that if you insist on having roof bars on a GTI, at least surfboards are the coolest thing you could carry! There is a longstanding tradition of VeeDubs and surfboards afterall.

Iagree with Robin. GTI's with surfboards look uber cool!
Chicks must dig it!!!

I might just get them put on and attach a surf-board just for the look

i like roof racks on the older mk1, mk2 chrome with wood look, but not sure on a mk5, do you take them off when your not using them??

Ok...
Firstly guys its a necessity. This is my 3rd Golf to sport roofbars and my Jeep Wrangler previously too.
I like to get their quickly so that old camper is out of the question.
They dont stay on,its a quick job to remove in fact the MKV bars are quicker than the MKIV's.If you open your front doors you will see a plastic cap. This unscrews and the bars locate in them. The rear in the window recess.
I put either sparkys tape or masking tape on the paintwork before fitting, they do and will mark the paintwork as I found out on the previous GTI and the PD150.
They are a nightmare for AVG MPG.. I just come back from an east coast run.140ish miles £25.. Last year travelling down to Cornwall in the PD I averaged 34mpg.The wrangler was a 4.0ltr.I was averaging 12mpg.From Yorkshire to Cornwall...ouch
Chicks dig the car/boards,run a mile when they see me.. :nerd:

I may stick em on for the RR day...

Loving the surfboards. They go well with your username. lol

Some cars actually look pretty good with the roof racks on.

while your at it, stick a toe bar on for good measure!

Them tow bars are now an official option here in SOuth Africa. Completely removable like with the BMW's. We wanted one for our car but the dam thing is so heavy to clip in my cant take it out of the boot. So bang went that theory.

So if my dads bikes break down shw wont be driving the golf with the trailer to pick him up.

All you need now is some steelies and a rusty bonnet to get the 'rat look'
