Title: Exhaust front pipe/down pipe
Post by: rupertfinch on 20 May 2008, 19:38
Hello chaps - tis continues to rattle like a git between 2750 and 3250 rpm in all gears.

Have had a go at heat wrapping, exhaust gum and attempting to dremel the heat shield bit off - all to no avail.
So what's its official name and what price a replacement?

Whoops can't work out how to include an image...I'll be back

Replying to myself - I do this quite often.

Anyway, still a bit confused about the method of pasting an image into a message

If only turning up the twisty button would work.

It's really spoiling the car! I've a 1991 205 gti that rattles like buggery, so you'd think I'd be used to the noise. I forgive the French as they made it out of those tinfoil containers you get fried rice in, but as the German motor doesn't make any other noises apart from that bloomin' buzz I want it sorted quick.

So a proper VW name and an appropriate price would be greatly appreciated, before I'm forced to go to kwikfit! Aaaaaah.

Thanks. Mark

Mine rattles exactly the same. Takes a bit away from the sound of the exhaust, but not been able to pin point exact where it rattles. Not yet anyway.

Personaly i cant see how the downpipe would rattle, you sure its not the heat shield that covers the manifold at the top? they tend to rust off,  its the one where the hor ait feed joins to go to the air box.

I would think it was the heat shield, but not sure where yet. If you have the bonet open and rev the car it doesnt always happen. Happens more once you get moving. I will have a look later though to see what i can see while the car is cold

Is there nothing i could use to secure it a bit?

Yup that appears to be the upper part of my rattling culprit.

Can I ask if this photo was taken from underneath the car of from the engine bay?

Not quite sure how to hack it off as this was my original idea and I didn't get very far by using the cutting discs on a dremel. If anyone else has any other ideas then I am sure that both of us would be interested to hear.

That photo was taken from the engine bay, just looking behind the engine

Yup! That's my problem areas as well. I've tried hacking it from underneath when I had the car up on a hydraulic lifter so plenty of room to move about underneath but didn't get very far.

Can't really see another way around it - i guess that I will have to persevere and think of an alternative way to remove it and then cover the down pipe with heat wrap - should work ok. Although would like to hear from anyone who has actually managed to remove this blighter and their methods of doing it.

Mark.

Omg this happened to me and getting the f!*ker off was the worst thing i have ever had to do!! I had the car up on axle stands and it took me a whole weekend to get it off by hacking it in to bits where i could, i cut myself to sh!t and wouldn't EVER wana do it again!!

Saying that, problems solved now

Mattoligy - did you then leave it as it was? Or wrap it in Heat wrap? Not too sure I'd fancy leaving it.
