Title: MK3 Fitting suspension - front top mount.
Post by: ineson on 20 May 2008, 15:30
I have been tryin g to fit my new springs and shocks to my mk3 and have come across a problem.

I have undone the two bottom bolts, and just need to undue the top mount.

In my haynes and from what I have been told there should be a bolt with 2no. slots in it fixing the strut, but I have a standard 21mm bolt with an 8m alun key fitment to the strut top. Apparently you can get a special tool to take the top nut off from VW.

Sorry if this sounds stupid but I am still learning on some things, especially the suspension.

Now I am having difficulty trying to get the nut off as everytime I trun the bolt with my socket, the whole thing is turning, and even when I try to hold an 8mm alun key in to hold the strut firm it jumps thread.

Any help or useful hints with this would be appreicated. Sorry for the crap explaination.

the easiest way to get them of is pop to a local garage and get them to gun them off then just poped them back on loosly not so loose they will fall off on way home of course the closer the garage the better
failing that if the shocks r no good or ur not goin to sell then u could try and put some mole grips roint the shock its self

Tried the mole grips last night, tried cracking the hut aswell on the top as they wont be used again, but no movement at all. Going to pop to a locaal garage over the weekend and get them to airgun it off and then I should be sorted.

Thats the only way of getting it off in your case!

If that dont work you need a small angle grinder and cut the strut in between the springs!

Still wouldnt be able to get the top nut off even if I cut the strut (not that I am going to! )

I will stick with the plan of going to the local garage and getting the airgun on it. Sounds safer!
