Title: exhaust swap 1.3 to 16v?
Post by: bigman_10 on 20 May 2008, 01:37
After getting anoyyed with a few exhaust holes in my 1.3 (sounds like a v8) i was wondering if it'd be possible to fit a gti exhaust off either an 8 or 16v? i know that they are slightly different in design but are the bores majorly different? Its just that almost complete used jobs go for pennies on the bay. its gone at the joining sections but its rusted into some nice holes!

i'm not too bothered about the having a cat but how could i go about it?
cheers

Chris

ps anyone spotted the floating left side  woops!

its possible yes, you just either need to weld the 16v system to your old one or get a piece of step up pipe that will match the bores correctly. ie. will bolt into your 1.3 system and enlarge to a suit the 16v

These guys do all sorts of bore adaptors/straight through sections etc:

Planning on using their parts to graft an ansa 16v system onto my 1.3 at some point

oh nice link mate, cheap as chips! I've just measured the with of the tail pipe and its 42mm on the 1.3 so i pressume i need the piece 50-42mm is both the 8v and 16v the same bore? i might even buy the whole exhaust off them looking at the prices.

woops just had a look and from what i can see the 16v is 55mm the 8v 50mm  annd the rest 42mm now i just need to find the 55mm to 42mm reducer! i think the 1.8 carb may be 50 aswell? :undecided:

What does getting rid of the mid box do :embarassed:

It would reduce back pressure as it would be less restrictive with a centre pipe, and mean may gain a few bhp as the exhaust gasses are pushed out of the system easier, but it would be minimal like 5bhp max just be using that alone :undecided:! plus it would be louder so you dont have to knock on the door when picking your mates up!

When I ever think about what these mods do, I always refer to how a rally car is set up. Obviously with a pinch of salt. Anything to do with flow of gases in and out of the engine will help increase performance. More air in, more air out, more fuel in, more power out. Simple as that to a certain extent.

Rally sets up would be large bore all the way through, with mandrel bends, no silencers or cat etc etc. Big port head and manifold blah blah. You get the idea

Less restrictive exhaust reduces the power lost to pumping the air out
