Post by: MAT ed30 on 18 May 2008, 11:11
been out for a blast in the mk2 and just get stuck in 3rd and will not come out  i think the box must be fooked as it will not come out of 3rd no matter how hard i try . The car is a 1991 mk2 golf gti 16v
any help would be good and how easy is it to change the box on the golf?

My mate's driver got stuck in first. We couldn't get it out of gear at all, he scrapped the car after that!

That said, are you sure it is stuck in gear? Have you tried moving the linkages in the engine bay yourself as it could just be a dodgy linkage not allowing enough movement on the stick.

Assuming its a cable clutch check the cable that heads in throught the top, I know you should be able to pull a car out of gear however you never know what might work, as you probably know its not uncommon for the gearboxes to Fook up, just absolute wank  :undecided:

Hope you get it fixed mate

Mine got stuck in third, took about 30mins of hitting the lever arm on the box and swearing a lot and it free'd back up...

...I think it was the swearing that helped.

ahh the bits of metal sound like the sycro-mesh has blown up. These 020s can be repaired, just not an econical repair if you get me. Cheaper to buy a new one unfortuntely

it made more sense to get it rebuilt as the car is completely original and has a rebuilt engine in it aswell . I was going to get a second hand box but you never know it might be fooked from the get go or it last 2 months
