just bought a golf yesterday its an 87 8v gti digifant and i have some problems with it. im pretty sure it needs a new heater matrix which i have ordered off ebay btu i have no idea how to fit it! i know the centre console has to come out and the bottom of the dash but as far as it goes im a bit lost beyond that. help!!
then the next problem, when i put my foot down it hesitates and has no guts at all in any gear, now i had a digifant before and i know they pull like trains.
will it be down to my cooling system problem? i put new leads and plugs on it today but not a dizzy cap and this has made no difference at all.
i will chance the dizzy cap at some point, but will this cure it? im stuck for ideas please help!!!

Hi.
Although I hate to say it, the search function will shed loads of examples on the heater matrix, and as for the performance question, the 8v guys (if I remember rightly - Im a 16v dude you see) will prob all shout "Blue Temp Sender" at you in a really loud voice.
Hope you get it sorted.
-
BLUE TEMP SENSOR!!!!
But seriously, before you start trying to tune the thing, its a good idea to change this for a genuine VAG item as they are known to be temperamental.
-
right cheers guys.......er.....where is the blue temp sensor?
-
Fits in the top of the coolant pipe flange coming out the front of the head. There will be a blue one and a black one in series.
-
right ive got a white plug type one and then next to that is a little like 12mm nut type one i have pics of them but no idea how to put them on here!
-
Ahhh with it being an 87 it may well have the earlier type then. I think they're more expensive too :lipsrsealed:

That look familiar?
-
yes is it the little nut you can see on the top of the coolant pipe?
how the hell did you get that picture that fast?!!!
-
more expensive? expensive sounds like a lot and more sounds like a lot more??
-
Already had the pic from when i sold that golf a while back
This may well be complete bollocks, but i think they're around 30 quid from vw rather than the tenner or so for the later blue temp sender.
-
do you think this will cure my performance problems? or just the temp gauge problems? it looks like the nut has gone green, you know like you get on old copper sometines?
-
Personally i'd check the timing and the co level before i shell out on new parts.
As for the heater, try the valves in the engine bay first. Start with the easy/free stuff
-
cheers for the advice mate.

this will take you some time, be patient and have plasters at the ready. its an easy job (even i did it!) but its a bit frustrating!
CO/idle tuning guide:

this is for the digi ignition engine only (89 on?) so will differ to yours i think. cant find a guide for the k-jet system.

went to vw today and ordered my temp sensor £35 incl vat.....basta**s! so i thought i would order a door pin replacement as well £5 incdl vat! gutted.
-
did you check the timing before buying the sensor?
-
no i dont have a clue about timing im sorry to say! i have not bought it yet, the vw guy said it should be in on wednesday. how do i do it do i need a timing light?
p.s thanks for all your help with this mew.
-
i know you are saying about timing but surely that wont stop the light flashing on the dash will it?
