Title: Stop me before its too late: non VAG Big Bumpers?
Post by: Goops on 17 May 2008, 19:06
Well its been almost 3 months of me looking for a genuine VAG front Big Bumper after some knob done a hit and run on my motor...

I am almost at the point of giving up!
I did manage to get a genuine front one but it has scratches that I can not remove even after extensive sanding sessions!  Most bumpers on ebay are from dudes up north and I can not trust those little pictures to make a judgement on the condition of the top plastic bit (scuffs, scratches etc)

I know pattern parts dont sit right, but can they not be modified to fit proper? or are the gaps in the lines that lame?

I have one more scrappy to try on Monday after which I am resigned to getting a pattern part, stop me now if you think its worth waiting and looking around more! :embarassed:

I got one from GSF last month, wasn't a problem and just bolted straight on

Really dude? Most posts I have searched on here seem to suggest that GSF ones are rubbish?!

I have to get the bumper's middle part colour coded etc so that will cost more money, dont really want to send a part to the body shop only for it to sit odd afterwards?

Are the front Big Bumpers without the Fog holes the same as the Big Bumpers with the Fogs already cut out??
If so anyone cut holes out themselves?

I bought my replacement big bumpers (with fogs) from euro car parts. My comments....

1) They fit fine. A slightly larger gap against the front arches, but not enough to bother me.
2) The plastic seems good quality.
3) Getting the fog lights to sit properly was a biatch. Might have been the non-hella fogs though.
4) If I was doing it again I would deffo give the metal bumper iron a coat or two of hammerite before fitting as they seem a bit rust prone.
5) As for colour coding the middle bit... A body shop should only charge you £50 - £100 for such a straightforward job.
6) Even if you found a genuine VAG bumper that is aesthetically sound on the outside, it will prob be rusty inside. Do you want rusty bumpers, when thats about all the crash protection you get in a Mk2???

Cheers Conker,

That does hit home mate. Would be kind enough to post a picture of the gap against the front arch? Would be really helpful to get a comparative idea?

Thanks!

You can do what I did and just buy the bumper covers from VAG. They are obviously cheaper than buying the whole thing.
Remove the bumper and make sure that the metal frame of the bumper is not bent or twisted. You can then remove the plastic part of the bumper by unclipping it. This will leave you with just the frame. Then fit the new plastic and you have a new looking bumper that is a guarranteed fit.
If you have fog lamps though, like I do, you will have to cut out the apertures for the lenses.

Sorry, I'm a bit behind on posts. This gives you an idea...

the gap is about adjusting the bolt that holds it in place. over the year it loosens up and drops, or the hole rusts. thats why theres such a big gap on some cars.

Hi all.

Cheers for the pics conker, looks the genuine part (sad pun intended)

Blue and Darnpistonbroke never really asked about the "bumper skin" at the dealer. Did not even know such a thing existed!

I assumed the whole bumper is in 2 parts.........

i.e: part one and two are not seprable.....part three splitter is removable

I have managed to locate a bumper in a scrapyard near northampton!
Its "mint" except that one of the bumper clips is broken (apparanty I can use the ones on my current bumper to replace this??)

Go for it, it's a Gplate so could be 89 or 90 and the big bumpers were standard from part way through 90.
The side mouldings are pre 90 so all it means is that someone has swapped the small bumpers for the 90 spec ones, it's a really common mod so I would say nothing to to wrry about.
Go for it.

Thanks Tom, i think it was because some thieving git had pinched the lower spoiler that it looked odd.
