I have had my Golf GTi for about a month and all of a sudden at the moment it keeps cutting out, I thought it was just when it was cold but it seems to be getting worse now and I can drive it round for 20 mins and it will still do it.
I have been looking on the net and people are saying that theyre revs go mad and then it cuts out, mine just seems to die and I dont know why, the revs dont go up and down first it just looses power and cuts out.
It seems to do it less if I slow down slowly and gently put the clutch in, has anyone had a similar problem or know how to fix it? I hope its not expensive, cant afford it!
I dont suppose its anything to do with the cat cus mines bit buggered?!
Thanks, Gem

Oh and my oil light doesnt come on and have just had a new cam belt fitted, not sure if either of these make any difference?

Is the oil level ok? not running low?
Im not a mechanical person either i have a mechanic do all my work but either wont cost you much to sort, most things on golfs are easy to do if you know what your doing.
Im sure someone will spot this and give you an answer though

if it's when your slowing down to a stop (foot off gas) i would say it's a dirty butterfly in the throttle body?

^^^Agreed.

Mine is having that problem, the garage is saying it's the Lambda sensor

The oil is fine as I have just had the car serviced, well a few weeks ago now but all that is ok. Im not sure if having a new cam belt can effect the engine and cause it to cut out?
Got someone looking at that soon so I suppose if we get that looked at then that will rule that out if it doesnt fix it.
Has anyone had a similar problem and managed to resolve it, ive seen alot of people saying they have similar problems and have talked about replacing lots of bits but all seem to say they havent resolved the problem.
Its very weird because sometimes it cuts out every couple of minutes and other times it doesnt happen at all?!?!?!

Mine was doing the same, as soon as i pulled up to a junction it would cut out...
it got to a point which i did'nt won'a drive it no more
so i cleaned out all the pipes and the throttle body with carb cleaner and it sorted out the problem, i also found a hole in one of the pipes (pictured) about the size of a 10p so that was changed. It not cut out sinces.

sorry about the small pic it has a red arrow pointing to it

I will give mine a clean then and have a look see if I can find any holes, I know the cat is buggered so thats prob not helping cus it blows alot.
Fingers crossed cleaning it and getting the cam belt changed will resolve the issue, I will update once I have had these done!!
Thanks for all your help everyone!!

Sorry to tell you I've been having an ongoing battle with mine since about 3 months after I bought it!, now it's sat on my Mum's drive and I've had to buy a crappy old 406 estate to get me to work and back!!
Still not found out why it does it! Very depressing!!!

I'm just about to replace my coil!! see if that works! :undecided:

Whats been your symptons Andy? Apart from the obvious lol
When does it happen etc

Will be keeping an eye on this thread as my mates gti keeps cutting out at high speed, was travelling down the local bypas last night and it just cut out. Luckily he was able to pull in and wait until it would start again, but it wouldnt start until the engine had cooled down a bit.
Any ideas what this could be as he relies heavily on his car for work etc.

Mine did this, it was the ECU relay... cheap and simple to try first...
