as above, I've noticed over the past week that my car is making a strange moaning noise when above 50 mph and most noticable just at 75mph. Its not transmission as the sound is still there if I press the clutch in, so that also rules out the engine I presume. It happens on all road surfaces, worst on smooth new Tarmac. My gut feeling is wheel bearings although I've just gone out of warranty but car has only done 26k.
Does anyone have any other ideas or experiences?
I'm sure its not tyres, noise came over night and have even wear and 7mm on fronts and 4mm on the rears.
many thanks

....Could she be moaning because you've only done 26k miles in 3 years?
Sorry, that comment isn't any help at all. What does your VW dealer have to say about the problem? What's their diagnosis?

Feed the wife in the back of the car. That'll stop the moaning for sure
Seriously though, your first thoughts maybe right with the wheel bearings. :undecided:

As others have said wheel bearing is first thing that spings to mind, get it looked at. I left my MK4 for ages and it go so bad that you could hear it at about 30mph which got anoying lol
Saying that my MK4 was 7 years old and had done 78,000 miles. Sounds odd that it would go so soon btu stranger things have happened.

No flat spots on any of the tyres, possibly from handbrake antics ?

Wheel bearings have been an issue, as has the steering rack. Is the noise worse with any lock on ?
Only way to find out is to take it to the dealer. Tough about the warranty though - sod's law.

mine moans on anything except nice new tarmac and on some surfaces sounds like an old land rover with those nobbly tyres....dealer said it wasnt a bearing...just tyre noise...bridgestones with 10k miles on them....hasn't got any worse in 3 months..

Have a moaning noise from my tyres around 60 - 80 mph, took it to Micheldever Tyres to get the tyres looked at and they told me that the rear tyres were stepped, that this was caused by the suspension and that the noise will be there until I change the rear tyres and that I would have to put up with the noise for as long as possible. Essentially nothing I can do until I replace the rears. Advice was once I have changed rears I should rotate them regularly to prolong the length of time before it happens again.

My money is on the rear tyres. Have a look at the inner edges and i reckon they will be like a saw blade on the inner edge, with the fwd edge of one tread block being lower than the rear edge of the tread block in front.
hence the fwd motion of the car causes a droning noise akin to a Land-rover.

I am sure that you are right, that is how they kind of described it to me, but the question remains how do I stop it happening in future, is there something wrong with the setup? do you all get it on your GTi

Must admit my Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres have been very noisy on all but the smoothest of road surfaces since about 500 -750 miles after delivery. Performance is OK though and I've just learned to live with them
Not sure this problem is related to tyres - car needs to be taken to dealer to diagnose the fault.

Thanks for the feedback guys
I'm pretty sure its not tyres, i struggle to see how it could start all of a sudden and no handbrake turns or extreme driving
I'm not sure if its connected but i heard/felt a "ping" sound from the front right of my car turning onto my drive a few weeks back. Initially i thought i had scraped the underside going onto my drive, but as i straightened the steering it "pinged" again (hasn't done it since).
I'm currently waiting for 4 new monza's to arrive under warranty. I reported this sound i heard 2 days before the warranty ran out so they will be looking into this noise at the same time. Hopefully i can convince them this noise has now resulted in this "moaning" noise. Which to be honest, i think it has been there ever since??
How easy is it to diagnose bearing problems???? Sounds like I might get fobbed off
I dont mind paying to be honest- as long as its fixed, i will be shipping the car on if this sound is going to be joining me on a daily basis
