Right nearly got my golf taxed and tested...but I have a problem...Insurance.
Im only 21,not had my own car/insurance before, had a work vehicle for three years but had a prang...so cant get any reference from them.(no need to tell new insurance company about prang but no no claims!!!)
I aquired a mk2 (as many of you know!) and decided not to go all out (wait till the g60 for that!) so I've done the bits and pieces for mot, changed air/oil/fuel filters, etc etc and thought i'd have some fun learning the golf (handling maintenence etc) so im only looking for 3rd party...
Rung a few places, but all the quotes are ridiculous...1500-5000!!!third party??? If this is how it has to be its worth it she is SO much FUN to drive!!!
But surley there is a more reasonable insurance company out there???
Any advice would be apreciated
-
Thats riduculous, I can't believe they want that much :o.
I'm with direct line for my Coupe. Its a higher insurance group than the Golf GTI and I had to have an alarm and immobiliser installed before they would insure it. I have just renewed, it cost me ?240. I'm 35 with full no claims so without the no claims bonus that would still only come to ?685.70.
Must be cheaper quotes out there.
-
you would think so!
With 2 years no claims it drops to 500...
they wonder why people drive without insurance!(i do not condone this...no excuse if you cant afford the insurance dont drive the car!)
i havent tried any "specialist" insurance yet i will get on the phone tomoz.
...you still working rich??????
-
ps.250!!! thats salt in the wound!
-
Should be, do 12 hour shifts 6 to 6. The last post I did from work.........at home now, it was a good night.
Good luck with the insurance.
-
Just had a thought, I was about 19 when I had my first Golf GTI. I remember that places like Direct Line etc., were very expensive. I found the cheapest (for young drivers) was to go through Giles Insurance brokers. They were a pain in the a**e to deal with but they always came up with a cheaper quote. One of the questions they used to ask every year was 'whats the best quote you've had so far?'. Always tell them a figure lower than your best quote.....I'll bet they will beat it. Alternatively just tell them you haven't had a quote yet but you have a few other places to try yet. That way they should give you a fairly competitive quote straight off.
Would be worth a phone call:-
Giles (alton) Insurance
17 Lenten Street, Alton, Hampshire, GU34 1HG
Tel: 01420 82501
Good Luck.
-
cheers mate,i'll give them a try
apparently tesco are pretty good for young drivers aswell...we'll see!
should be asleep!!!

Hi have you tried :
carole nash,
0800 298 5500.
I know im older then yourself as im (40) but this is the first car i have insured as had always driven company vans for over 10 yrs,so had no no claims, and was getting qoutes over ?500 for third party, carole nash insured me for fully comp ?185.10,its a free phone number so you got nowt to loss, give them a try,
good luck.
-
hey...
Giles was 1300...better,tesco 1067...getting there...
I got about a week, lets try and get it under 1000!!!
thanks for the advice,
-
When I first got insurance on a Peugeat 205 GTI I had the same problems. In the end I went with Performance Direct (They advertise in the back of Fast Car and Max Power etc) and they were much cheaper.
It is worth exagerating you lowest quote when asked. Many insurance companies will try and match your best offer so far. Don't go mad - just about ?50 or so.
And ring around as many as possible. Many of the specialist ones in the back of magazines DO save you money.
I am now with elephant - you could try them as well.

-
Cheers,i'll give them a go...
I've heard of many horror stories from these places though...IE they quote you fullycomp, sign you up over the phone...you get your covernote and your only insured third party...when you do have to claim its a nightmare, not really a problem though if
1)get everything in writing BEFORE going ahead
2)You only want 3rd party anyway!
3)You dont crash!!!
I'll give a few a go this afternoon, and keep you posted...(not that any of you care with your ?100 fully comp insurance ??? ???)
-
I'll bet if you now go back to Giles with your ?1067 quote, they'll beat it. It really is worth playing one against another. At least its heading in the right direction.........keep us posted :)
-
I did tell giles my lowest quote was ?1100,Was told this is definatley the lowest quote they could do (1300)She actually told me to try tesco etc as they are more competetive for younger drivers...maybe she didnt like the sound of my voice....???
As you say in the right direction...
I just find it unbelievable that my third party insurance is going to cost me three times the price of the car!!!and god forbid if I do stack...I'm going to get NOTHING...ITS NOT FAIR!
but as my old man always said.....
lifes not fair!
-
I must admit, I built up 2 years worth of ncb before I could afford to get and insure a GTI. Drove around (very carefully) for those first 2 years in an 1100 Honda civic.
-
With 2 years nc my insurance drops under ?500!!
Sensible way would be to go buy a nice cheap car and build up my no claims!...
...but Its too late!I've been bitten by the gti bug,you may think Im foolish but I would pay anything!!!
I've kind of justified it to myself...?1100 works out about a fiver a day, well worth it in my eyes!
-
Once bitten........you can never go back ;D
Noticed that you joined the other forum this morning, guess you hadn't come across that one before.
I actually found out about this forum from that one!
-
yea,its good, thx???I seem to be thanking you a lot!I do appreciate your help!
theres some very useful threads!
-
I think thats what these forum's are all about, sharing knowledge......I think they are great. Just makes a change for me to not be asking the questions and being able to provide some input.
-
87_project I sympathise with you as I to am only 21 and faced high insurance, but after many hours of surfing the net late at night proping my eyelids open with match sticks, I struck gold. First quote was about
? 1800 tpft that was with the company who insured my first car,CIS. eventualy I got it to about ? 860 fc with direct line, but then just out of luck I tried AXA They said they could insure my golf gti 8v for ? 612 fc with no alarm or imobiliser. saved myself a wedge of money im 21 drive a class car and only have 2 yrs no claims
circumstances almost the same give them a try on axamotor. co.uk and see how you get on. and let me know
Harr1s............ ;D ;D
-
nice one i'll give them a go tommorrow
-
So far no horror stories, recived the policy and certificate of insurance, from carole nash, and every thing fine, just as stated over the phone, they seem pretty genuine.and part of the axa insurance group.
-
Hi all,had come and tell you guys something!...
...just rang screentrade online insurance brokers...
Quote:third party fire and theft:?5500
Fully comp:?14350...FOURTEEN THOUSAND POUNDS!!!!!!!!!!???
the car is worth ?400 if that!!!
Remember, although im only 21,I have never had an accident(touch wood) or claim, nor any points(yet)
If anyone else can beat that for the highest quote on a 87mk2 gti...they will get a medal!
Tesco is winning so far, quoted ?1056 third party.Im going to start it on mon unless i can find a cheaper one!any help is appreciated.
(I have tried,axa,directline,performance direct,4youngdrivers,elephant,the jokers mentioned above,to name but a few!)
-
That just takes the p!ss. You would have thought that they would be too embarrassed to even tell you that price!
Mine is with www.egg.com - might be worth a bash...
jv
-
Right...
We're getting there...
Greenlight just quoted 875 third party fire and theft...also must recommend john at brentacre insurance and darren at herts(HIC) ?1000,?940 respectivley.
Im going to give john another call and see if he can beat greenlight...:)
We've broken the ?1000 barrier so im happyish.
-
Nice one Ben. ;D
Definately worth the extra effort.
-
Mate,
Try Performance Direct on 0870 4203896...
Tell them that the lowest quote you have had so far is ?700... I bet they will either match it or better it.
Let me know.
Cheers,
ajh
-
Just tried them...
...?1025 third party fire and theft!,#
I did tell them the best was 750...remember i have no no claims(bummer!!!) I havent made a claim...just that i was on company insurance before...but cant get proof great!
I have tried john at brentacre insurance was very helpful...but couldnt beat the quote...
Apparently there are industry rules and regulations meaning that the companies cant quote too low???
could be nonsense...but he sounded pretty genuine...definately worth a shout for anyone with a modified car as they dont charge any extra for mods...(except engine obviously!)
mines standard...I think 875 is about as low as it will go!I ve got a few days left until i sort my tax(and a slight smoke prob!!!) so i'll keep trying!!!running out of places now...if anyone needs a list of insurance companies my phonebill at the end of the month will have pretty much every company in the country!!!
If anyone can suggest a place not mentioned already it would be great.
Cheers for all the help!
-
Best one i found for insurance is AXA Direct. Got screwed around by a few companies, saying it had to be garaged overnight, and cat2 immobiliser fitted, and still the lowest for me was ?700!!!
Axa im fully comp, 2yrs no claims for ?397 , and for my area thats damn good !
Try em, i done it online and saved even more!
