Ive only had the car 3 weeks and its never worked..HAs it got Aircon? Or is it busted do you thinks??
Cheers

ECON turns the aircon OFF, its on by default on non uk GTIs' . ECON stands for ECONOMY.
i think....
-
yea i know. I have tried it switched on and off. On Low, 16, 16.5 and nothing but hot air pumps out.
-
it pumps out hot air even when on "low"? then its fooked! lol
-
If it's not had much use it may just need a service and re-gas. Not too expensive, around the £50 mark and there are usually mobile guys that will come to you.
-
Hope so. Im skint at the mo!
-
i know this doesnt help but mine froze my tits off this AM on the way to work

Yes you need to have it re-gas'd, you should use your aircon regular as it will deteriorate the seals in the pump unit if you dont, and will more likely loose gas pressure through lack of use, i run mine daily just for 5 mins and then shut it down or put it onto economy setting.

Hi
Mine stopped working last week it didn’t make any funny noises just wouldn’t blow cold.
Took it to the dealers and the pulley had sheered off the compressor cost £1200 in parts alone luckily warranty covered it.

The air con pump is constantly running (albeit very slowly even when "off") to prevent this.

Sounds b*ggered! You might need to take a trip to the dealers to get it sorted!

Sounds knackered, I've had 2 compressors on mine already and a set of cooling fans!

She just out of warranty so I brought an extended warranty from warranty direct. Called them up and asked if it was covered and they said yes but as its a clain less than 90 days from the start then its unlikely they will pay out..
What a bunch of uselss idiots

Had my Aircon running in auto mode from day 1 of the 3 years I've had the car from new...still get 34-39mpg....the air con is still as good (and cold) as it was the day I bought it...well impressed
-
If your just out of warranty then I would try the VW dealer and get it done free or ask them for a good will payment - depends how long out of warranty it is.
-
Just as we get some nice weather mine failed at the end of last week, it is in the shop right now waiting for a new "air-con fan unit".
Luckily my warranty doesn't run out until the end of June, and I am getting them to replace a white worm infested tailgate badge at the same time.
I have got a brand new Golf plus as a courtesy car in the meantime, which to my amazement has a smaller boot than a regular Golf!

Can't help you on the aircon issue I'm afraid but mine's just out of warranty and not that cold at the moment with is ominous.
I have a quick question about extended warranties though. VW have quoted me £512 to extend the warranty at a decent level of cover, and Warranty Direct have quoted just over half that figure for decent cover using independants. I'm a bit worried about taking a mk5 to an independant as they won't be that familiar with them as most are still under warranty and still in the dealer network and WD will only pay £40 per hour labour rates plus you need to cough up about £25 excess so am swaying toward the VW one despite the hideous cost. Any opinions on extended warranties from anyone?

I had a Warranty Direct policy on my previous Boxster. It (thankfully) had main dealer labour rate cover from when I first took it out, but this option was removed from other customers (probably) due to high warranty claims. When the RMS went (£750 dealer job), I paid for the intermediate shaft seal and also replacement clutch (only £300 more) - very cost effective as the gearbox removal labour was already covered by the warranty. The warranty was transferable to the new owner but he didn't keep it on  Guess that's why he sold it when the aircon condensors (not covered by the warranty BTW) went and he was faced with a £1200 bill. Then he traded it and bought a TVR
Warranty companies are in the business of making money and reducing costs, that's why they all revise their cover from time to time.

Mine works fine, so it seems
but it nevers seems really cold, was in my dad's merc last week and it was frosty!!
its cold enough, but i want to be able to see my breath when its on its lowest setting

I finally got my car back today. They ended up replacing the entire air-con compressor, I dread to think how much it would have cost.
Any hoo I have decided to keep my 05 GTI after next month (3 year ownership, is that a record here?) and take out the VW extended warranty as the next GTI that I want (18" Monzas,DSG, 510 sat nav) is just going to cost too much, what with the credit crunch and all.

Have you got the recirc button (one with the swoosh arrow) turned on. you are meant to have this on, so the cold air stays in the car and the AC unit doesn't have to work as hard to push cold air into the car.
