During this spell of good weather i decided it was a good time to start driving with esp off. This has to be one of the best decisions I have ever made, and trust me when I say Im not hyping this up. From the first corner (at normal driving speed) the difference was immediately noticable. The car feels totally different.. like its been let off it leash. So much so that I have seen a noticable diffence in mpg too  Almost immediately you can feel that your not being held back, and the car even feels lighter in some aspects. Going round corners now requires alot more skill and you can really feel the power being shifted around. I dont think I will be driving with it switched on again.
So if you drive a R32 and havent tried it.. i strongly reccommend you do!!

This used to work well on my old car, not tried it on the GTi yet

You come from a R blue???
-
Nope, it was a ford  LOL, but did a similar thing as you describe, even when pulling away it would make a difference (as well as the smoke it would cause if you went a bit mad LOL)
-
what is wrong with you people??? its off half the time when im driving.. it completly ruins the "fast" in you.
-
I read a little about turning it off before but was warned not to do it in the wet. So up until now I havent really had the opportunity to. But now the weather has changed... its not going back on
-
i do leave it on in the wet, but its still not as bad as u may think.. as long as u dont drive like a twit, it dosnt matter if its wet or dry..
-
i guess its safe to be off, as even when its off its never properly off
-
ita swine though as everytime you switch car off the esp returns to on, so you need to remember to turn off again. espec on 1/4mile days lol.
-
yeah. i always feel that it uses more petrol... im sure it actually doesnt tho. its just maybe because i drive different
-
The ESP button is the first thing I press when it's dry. I leave it well alone if there is even a hint of damp in the air.

I think I gonna have to go with that! But it does seem to do better mpg too when its off too. I didnt realise how much the traction is effecting all four of the wheels. I go round quite a few RA on the way to work and with it off I can now actually get tire squeel. i know the power is still being shifted around but the car no longer feels like its being held back. Having it off seems to have struck the perfect balance between traction and fun.... and did I say how it feels much faster
-
cant believe ppl dont know about the ESP button or scared to use it.. not like the car is going to turn into a bomb with a count down

I have always hesitated previously mainly down to the fact that the R32 is a heavy car, and the weather has not been so great since i got my car (Sept), and with my enthusiastic driving style, its always a worry that I would end up in a hedge. I think now the complete opposite is tru, as the car is much more predicatable. i just wish I didnt have to turn it off before every journey.
-
yeah is a bit of a pain having to turn it off everytime. to be honist, its a programmed thing, so vagcom could probably disable the "reset" on it. or have it engine activation state changed to "off" instead of "on"
worth looking at anyway..
as before, im not sure if it uses more petrol when its off? maybe its just the difference in driving style rather than it actually using more?
-
Am I correct in thinking your tyres will ware down faster with it off?
-
I turned off the ESP this weekend....it was quite late at night and i wanted to try it out....thought i would leave it on for the journey home from a friends house but i came out of a give way how i normally would and thought to myself....best leave the ESP on lol... :lipsrsealed:

not really?? all it does is turn off (or nearly off) the computer control of the car. so if your wheels spin, it wont cut power to stop it, it will allow them to spin. so only in that aspect will it means the tyres ware down.
-
Yeah thats what I meant Steve. Hummm might give it a go on the way home today :D See what all the fuss is about.

Put your windows down and step on it...all i used to hear in the GTI was a nice long screech with the sound of the turbo whistling lol

I would say a defo yes! I could smell the rubber when I got out of mine yesterday... not normally possible with the esp on. But I guess thats what you expect doing 45 round a RA

Thats the only off putting thing, at £125 a corner its not cheap for a set of new rubber.
-
just cuz ESP is off, doesnt mean you have to drive it hard.....

I have 11k from my tires so far and literally no wear. I was expecting to get about 20k from this set.. now that I have discovered non-esp mode, i think i should seriously reduce that estimation. But as Steve said there is no need to drive it hard, it just with this window down weather it quite difficult
-
and the tishhh noise for us GTI'ers and the v6 noise for you R32'ers :p
-
Iv been a complete pikey and not used to A/C so far as I don't my consumption to drop so I have sunroof and windows down and that noise is just brilliant, I wonder if you get bored of it after a while?

With this new discovery then R32UK, does that mean you'll be posting a few more victories in the 'What car have you beat in your GTI ...?'

LoL... its always the case I guess. It must just be that people see us and think, hes young driving a quick car... lets see if he knows how to use it
Dont think the backwards cap, windows down and full vol 2pac n Biggie do much to help!
p.s. Last bit was a joke

I've gotta say I completely agree with the original post. I've not driven my Gti with 'esp' on for a long, long time. When on the rare occasion I have forgotten to switch it off, within the first mile I can tell straight away, that the car feels more reserved and heavy in the front end.
It seems to be the case that the 'esp' is so sensitive, that it tries to correct something a nano second before it's necessary and as a result the driver over compensates, before it's really necessary, making for a far less flowing and rewarding drive than if you had it switched off.
We all strive to create bewilderingly fast versions of this beautiful car, and I can't believe that anyone would restrict themselves in such a way.
Bollocks to the tyres, you didn't by a Gti to see how many miles you can squeeze out of your Fullrun's, before you have to spend another £150 on a front pair. You bought a Gti to fit it with the shiniest, stickiest, rubber boots you've ever owned and then to go and look for prey on the road. Or at least that's why I bought mine
Long live the 'off' button for 'esp'

Isn't it ironic, that someone called 'Bush' happens to be a 'pussy eater'....
