Title: mk2 gti 8v, what engine can i replace it with?
Post by: Broody on 09 May 2008, 13:07
Im sorry if this topic has been covered before, i did a search but didnt find much.

I have just got a GTi 8v E reg to mess about with as a project on the CHEAP and i want to replace the engine, but whats the best engine to replace it with on the CHEAP, nothing like a 20v turbo, just another enigne that isnt to much hassle to fit and will give a little bit of a kick.

ive heard that the 9A (2ltr 16v) is a good choice, is this true?
How much work is need to fit this or a simila one, do they sit on the same mounts?

Ive done three engine conversion before so im not affraid to et my hands dirty.

any help is greatly appreciated!

thanks guys,

Neil

I think yours being on a E reg would be a K-jet system and a different loom  :undecided:  I think the 2 Litre valvers are Digi (not entirely sure but someone else will probably set the record straight )

I am sorry that is a digi so you may be able to do the 2 litre valver swap, still not sure about the wiring though as I think that changed on a 91 . K-jetronic was the system fitted to the early 8V's and all MK2 16V the digifant engine management system was fitted to later MK2 8V's and I think MK3 GTI's.

ah right, is the k-jet the engines with the fuel rails coming off the top of the air filter? my mate has a mk2 gti 16v which is like that.

Hey, nice to see another sheffielder

I'm thinking about getting hold of a 2l 16v too, I've seen them on ebay for a range of prices, from a couple of hundred to about 8 hundred!

we should go to a breakers yard and if they have 2 2ltr 16v engines, ask if they'll do a good deal! or buy one get one free!

That is a Digi Engine running a CE1 fusebox (pre-1990) therefore the later 2L 16V engines etc will not work without alot, and I mean a lot, of re-wiring. Its only the 1990 models that are direct fit as they run CE2 Electrics (same as all the later models like the 2L 16V, VR6 etc)

The best thing you could do with yours is fit the 2E or 3A Engine from a MK3 Golf GTI 8V or an Audi 80 2.0E. These are 8V bottom ends and all you'd need to do is a straight swap and change your dizzy. It'll not give you huge amounts of more power but it will increase you torque and thats more important.
Torque = Acceleration.

Plus this makes the 8V more tune-able so you can easily get them to 140-150bhp this way.

thanks alot toddy, at least that gives me some idea of what i can look for now to fit. what bhp is the 2ltr 16vs?

if its easier to fit a 8v i might do that, i dont want too much work.

i think im going to go for the 2ltr 16v, would i need a later fuse box for the golf, (ie, a 1990 onwards one) to make a mk3 golf engine fit propperly?

2.0 16v's from a MK3 Golf are 150bhp, from a Corrado 2.0 16v is 136bhp.

The cheapest and easiest option and also if you dont want to much work is a bottom end from a Golf MK3 GTI 8v, Passat 2.0 8v, Audi 80 2.0.  You will get more torque from these engines and with the help of a s/s exhaust and cam will let loose even more horses

In which application do you mean?

If you mean for the 2.0 8v, you use the 2.0 bottom end from the mk3 and the head from the mk2. Just bolts straight on

Edit:

what top end should go with them bottom ends?

Sorry, having re-read that it makes more sense than i first thought!  I take it you are referring to:

You can't just straight swap for the CE2 fusbox either. It pretty much involves re-wiring most of your car!
I'd go for the 2E from the Golf purely as its easier to get hold of than the Audi one and has a longer stroke iirc

I have a better idea, buy my golf mk2 that has a bent chassis and take the 1.9 8v Big bore with fast road CAM, kent pully, piper cross, air filter which is also chipped. Goes off the clock at 120mph and keeps going. With only 10,000 miles on it. I did this once and was to scared to do it again!

Built and installed by these guys www.theengineshop.info

I drove the car into a post, shame as the body work is fine, the car is in my garage and I turn it over about every two weeks. It still drives but is sorn at present. I wouldn't recommed driving it though. I was going to keep the car but have brought a MK4 golt GTI and got in to cycling so need the money for a new racing bike. The engine cost £1300 new so I would be looking at £600 for the whole car. Which if you had time you could break and make some money back, i'm to lazy! The car is near orpington in kent. Drop me a mail if your intrested warrenpholton@aol.com.

If not I'll keep it for a project.

P.S I have building work going on so won't be able to get pictures of the car for about 3 weeks. I could get some off the engine this weekend and mail them. let me know.
