so its a now 2.0 91 91'spec 8v gti
but the silly thing keeps cutting out. did it 7 times in a 5 mile journey just now!
its definately an electrical/spark issue as it cuts out smooth as silk, and it does it in every driving condition, coming to junctions, cruising at 50, reversing etc
now if i leave her in gear when she's cut out, and turn the ignition into postioion 2 while rolling (not turning the starter) she'll start back smooth as silk again.
iv fiddled with all the electrical bits under the bonnett while she's running and she wont cut out. im lost!
its worrying when your brakes and steering both fail so i think i need it sorted!

So........ have you put a mk3 2.0 engine/electrics in it?
-
no just the 2e bottom end. everything else is standard pb
-
I'd be suspecting a loose connection or a dodgy ignition switch
-
is the ignition switch the one above the ecu?
-
No, the ignition switch behind the ignition barrell
-
I'd suspect the ignition switch too. remove any heavy keyrings from your car key as they bugger the switches quicker!
-
excellent!
so do you have to change the barrell too? or can you keep the same keys?
also, i can change an engine, but electrical stuff scares me! an easy job?
-
Changing the ignition barrel is a pain in the arse. Have a haynes book handy and follow the instructions to the letter.

Nah you keep the barrell, it's just the electrical switch behind the barrell that you change.

so, still a sh#t of a job i take it?
