Title: Oil warning lamp and buzzer
Post by: WOOKIE on 24 April 2004, 00:21
Hi all, im new to the forum and i have a problem with my first (first VW) MK1 GTI convertible on an A(84)plate bought in Feb . Today was the first time i drove the car after in a week and warning light and buzzer for the oil keeps coming on but the oil level is OK ?? The manual says "if the lamps flashes although the oil level is in order, DO NOT DRIVE ON. Do not even run the engine at idling speed get expert assistance." Thats where you guys come in ;D please help if you can. The car is fine to drive and has done 137000 miles. I've just done the brakes new black diamond discs, new GSF calipers and pads and still the brakes arent great.  :-[ :'( ???

if the sender is telling the truth then this means you have low oil pressure......... it should be 2.0 bar at 2000rpm with oil temp at 80c

the warning light should come on at turn of ignition and they once you start it should go out......
the buzzer only comes on when the oil pressure is below.. 2.0 bar and then the revs are over 2000 rpm....

if you start it up dont rev it let it idle and if the buzzer comes on then its more than likely that its the a faulty high oil pressure sender........

there are ways of testing the oil pressure by taking the dip stick out and reving the engine.......... a ford mechanic did this when my mate brought a gti and took him along!!.......
i think he was looking for pressure against his thumb........ someone on here should know more about this!!!!!!!!! golf vr6.......anyone????

other than this you could buy a compresion tester and i think they screw into the hole where the high presure sender is.....which is on top of the oil filter housing...... someone may know about this.....!!!

also check the wiring on the sender as it may be disconected or loose!!!!!!!

:) Thanks for the help vwsystems, I went to VW dealers in stevenage WAYSIDES and they were very helpful the tech there told me it would be the PCB on the back of the dails from what i had told him and the way to make sure was that the next time the buzzer and light came on bang the dash with my hand and right enough the light and buzzer stopped this was after i had already replaced the pressure senders >:(!! but you learn something new every day.
Thanks again for your help ;D

You might want to chk that the nuts at the back of the instrument panel are tight and make a good contact with the pcb. Had a lot of teething probs with mine, the temp gauge didnt move and the temp light was flashing, I put it down to a sender prob but when I took the clocks out I noticed that two nuts were loose + when tightened, the gauge worked + the light went out! :D

p.s if your taking the dash apart, disconnect the battery!!!! I melted some wires in my loom when I was poppin out the headlight switch >:( the connector block at the back wasn't on fully and a metal fixing in the dash shorted the bottom pins on the switch :o
Not a good experience  + embarrassing mistake ;)
