Title: SatNav - how?
Post by: Steve78 on 08 May 2008, 15:04
I wouldn't mind having SatNav in my car.  What is the model number of the unit I need, is it the RCD510??  Regarding the aerial, how do I know if my car has one?

Could I just take my car to VW and get it done?  Anyone got an idea on cost?  And most importantly, is the SatNav system any good?  I remember the dealer telling me it was a waste of time and advised me to get something by TomTom instead...

Thanks.

Its RNS510, the unit new from VW would be around £1800 from what i recall, there is some on ebay at times, you wont have the areil in the car, but you can add one yourslef easily for aprox £10 , you do this whilst fitting the nav unit

ps i like the unit, and find its very good

It looks great but I can't justify £1800.  Not sure how VW can either to be honest!

^^yeh thats why i did it myself, no way is it worth £1800, but i did like the standard look over the aftermarket alternatives

I have my insurance due at the end of the month and my Arsenal season ticket renewal to pay for (£1300) so I may re-evaluate it later in the year.  Hopefully it will drop in price too!

Does look good though...

I bought a Tom Tom One, and have travelled all over Europe with it.

£106 delivered. Bargain. Plus it fits in my pocket and makes the car less attractive for thieves. I cant recommend the ONE highly enough, it just works.

Where abouts do you attach it too?  I mean does it have a cradle that gets stuck to the windscreen?  Does it get in the way or anything?

Which TomTom product is it exactly? (http://www.tomtom.com/products/category.php?ID=0&Language=1)  Are the ones that give traffic info any good?

Thanks.

This one, but it seems to have got up a bit, I think mine was a special Easter offer or something. It has a windscreen sticky, I just put mine in the bottom mid windscreen area and its perfect. You link it to your pc and updates maps for free, and roadworks etc.

It just navigates, it doesn't play music, connect to your phone, massage you or tuck you in at night!

You could always fit the MFD2 - its the model before the RNS510 touchscreen - does not have the useful functionality of the touchscreen (HDD & card reader) but works a treat & costs in the region of £400-500 possibly less if your lucky....

looks just like this:

Really simple to fit too

the only draw back with that unit is you cant listen to music while the nav's on unless you have the optional 6cd player fitted.

You also go for the aftermarket Kenwood ones with satnav which will be cheaper (£750 ish).

This is what K1 has in his car.

that the brand new Kenwood?? have though about this but not too keen on the dials; prefer the older DNX 7200 which Hurdy has

Hmm, I see what you mean about the dial. You would have thought that they could have done something a little more subtle :undecided:
