Title: exhaust help and advice
Post by: dbs on 07 May 2008, 19:08
hi all,

id like to change my backbox to something  better, im after a performace backbox but i want to spend about £150/175 ive looked at some sites but i dont want to pay like 300/400 for a exhaust for a 1.6 engine, so does anyone know any companies that fabricate performance backboxes at all.

I got a golf mk3 1.6 GL

sorry about this hijack, but saves starting another topic.

Backbox --> as i cannot find a backbox for my mk3, is there a another backbox i could buy which is similar to my 1.4. E.g a mk2 16v or mk4 1.6, etc.

Really want a backbox as im getting fed up of the rusty exhaust tip on mine
Just im on a really tight budget as i didnt really plan on getting a backbox but it has to done. So i was going to get a second hand one and get a m8 down the garage to fit it. Or if not too bad, i'll have a look myself

Cheers all, any help is much appreciated.

LL ;)

lavylunatic....volkspares back boxes will fit yours allthough they need a reducer pipe which add's £12 to the price on top of the £85 for the backbox..

nice one, so that is a straight swap? Dont like the price tag, but hey

Ok if i can get garage to fit one that needs modifiction (for a good price, got a m8 there), would it be just as good? I would need to get a second hand back box cheap to keep costs down.

Thanks for your help BB!

there are two types of system

There is one with a centre silencer in the centre section or there is the one with the larger centre box further back.

The VR6, GTI 8V and 16V, and later diesels use this,  the 1.4L 1.6L and 1.8L use the other type so anything to fit them will fit directly iirc if it origonal has a single tail pipe it fits, if it had twins it wont fit.

If you plan to lower your car, then get a custom made one, will cost you bigger bucks, i am paying £350 for a custom powerflow back box and center pipe.

I have one of these unversal backbox, that was made a for mk3 golf gti. Its wank as you get, and donthang right, and if i lowered it, it would smash the axel.

cant pay for quality, and you will end up paying twice like me, already spent £150 on my exhaust, only to rip it all off and start fresh!!!

Here is a cheap back box and what the seller sent me,

Dear lazylunatic,

.. here?s how it works.. (quite easy to fit)..
we supply the parts to fit these and they come with the CORRECT INLET DIAMETER FOR YOUR CAR so just need your make, model, year and engine size when making payment.. these fit by cutting through your exhaust pipe immediately behind the old back box, then removing the old back box and installing the new one by bending THE HANGERS THAT COME WITH THE NEW BACK BOX and connecting up either by welding or by using flexible steel exhaust tube and clamps which we can supply at additional cost as a FITTING KIT which is of the correct diameters and size for your particular car. cheers

Not worried about the piping, just use flexi stuff and loads of exhaust sealer/grease stuff. Securing it in place is the hard bit... any ideas.

Cheers all

its of an ebay seller - "zorsts"

it is quite cheap, like £50 for back box + £15 P&P. Might be worth a try, cause if it dont fit there is a 7 day return policy, but you need to read it cause it sounds like they can worm their way out of giving a refund.

It is stainless steel, so wont rust.

Check out the link, you can look at all the details:
