Title: Mechanics have NOOO Idea!!!
Post by: Mk2Lhotte on 06 May 2008, 20:26
Hi All!

I bet that there are many of you that dread that annual visit to the mot garage. I took my Mk2 today, failed, but one thing that amazed me was that he told me I had the wrong headlights, I have the crystal headlights, the bloke didn't have a clue!! Failed me on things that weren't even broke, wheel bearings etc etc.

Anyone from Burton on Trent area have any good suggestions as to where I can take her?? And perhaps appreciate the fact that she is 23 years old and wont be in the same condition as a 08 car????

Nationwide in stafford on foregate street.

Say that you were sent down by the lads from halfords, they should be ok with you.

You will loose your re-test fee if you go else where, I suggest that you find some cheap bulbs and take it back, tell them the jobs had been done and see what they do. Its worth a shot as they might have been trying to take work on.

Do your headlights have an E mark in the glass?

Is the beam pattern as it should be?

Maybe they are deficient with regards to the law.

Have you jacked up the corner which has been failed (if it's the rear chock the opposite wheels and let the handbrake off) and checked for any play?

Just because it's not a brand new car, doesn't mean it shouldn't be in MOT-able condition.  If something's worn out get it replaced, instead of whining about your car failing the MOT and looking for somewhere with lower standards to get it through.

it wont matter where you take it all the failures will still be on the computer system so another mot station will double check them just to make sure

Depends on how dodgy the mot station is.

When you say the wheel doesn't move that does not make sense for wheel bearings?
The bearings aid the rotation of the whole wheel. If they are knackerd they scrap in the shell and you can see the flowing motion of the wheel stops suddenly without inertia. Plus they will make a sound like scraping noises as the bearings have crumbled into bits if that badly damaged.
The movement you are refering to is the play from the wish bones/ball joints or steering arms. Excessive play is a fail so I think you need someone to go through each item on that list and explain the symtoms as you go along, otherwise any mechanic will pick up you know jack Sh*t and rape your wallet!

List the items in detail and see what actual MOT peeps on here say about them so you know for future reference fella!

As for the headlights I reckon there is no spread pattern on them which is why he failed it proberly?

I didn't mean it as though im moaning, i just meant the things he said, there wasn't anything wrong with them! nothing is worn out, all i meant by saying that he should realised that it isnt an '08 plate is because at the end of the day it is 23years old, it will have some rust, and wont be the samea s a brand new car, what i meant by this comment was that the company which took my car for the MOT shouldnt have failed it, the only thing i understood was that the exhaust was too loud, cus i need that changing as i bought it like this.

He said that the both front wheel bearing had excessive play, but when took to the local garage they said that there was no movement in the wheels at all, also that there was foul play by the front tyres, which i undertsand is them rubbing on the arches, when theyre on full lock, and also that the brake pipe is excessibly corroded, but when i put a wire brush to it it came out good as new?

To be honest I'd rather not go there, he started arguing with me, which i thought was pretty poor cusomter service, and when took to another garage and was told that the items on the test certificate were wrong and the ones which were correct they should ahve been on the advisory, such as a tyre being below the legal limit of 1.6mm again the second place said it is just over the limiter, suppose it is just judgement, and some places are always going to be like this??? cant beat it, supose everyone faces something like this at some point eh?? :D

It shouldnt matter if the car is 2 or 20 years old, it still needs to be in an mot able state, every car will have its defects and at the end of the day its the mot testers decision whether it passes or fails, you have got to remember that its their job on the line if they miss something vital.

Saying its poor customer service that he started arguing with you, what do you expect, your not an mot tester and you were trying to tell them how to do their job when your not even qualified in anything to do with it

You are always entitled to a second opinion from another garage if you think you have been unfairly treated. Then if necessary, go to the ministry of transport. (M.O.T) I did this once and got results, although my circumstances were different. I bought a car with a 12 month ticket, but half the things that are mandatory did not work. I reported it and the officer from the 'M.O.T' re-MOT'd the car with the original inspector present. The officer also found rust that would have failed the initial MOT as well as a badly blowing manifold, and rear exhaust silencer. The M.O.T inspector who issued the certificate got his ticket pulled and I still ended up with a 12 month ticket, although I did get the work done.
If you think the garage that failed your car was unjust in its actions, to try and get business from you, you are entitled to get a second opinion or, if you know your car is in satisfactory condition, you can formally report the MOT station to the Ministry of Transport.
