Title: Power Steering Screech
Post by: Strev on 06 May 2008, 17:46
Currently experiencing lots of screeching. My car seems to get through p/steering belts at a rate of knots. I reckon at least 1 belt per year. I am going to have a go at changing the belt myself. Can someone please talk me through how to do this?

Thanks!

The screeching may not mean the belt needs changing, I would first check the tension and if possible try and adjust it so its a bit tighter !

I have screeching power stearing also but I cannot tighten the belt because the bolt that you adjust is a standard bolt(i am guessing someone just replaced it wrong) not a bolt with the extra groove/shoulder on it to pull the belt tighter (as haynes manual shows it), do you know what I mean? diagram below:

Where can I get one of these from or is it a scrapyard job? OR has anyone got one floating around that i can have?

if a belt is wearing prematurely its most likely due to mis-alignment. if they are outa line it'll cause no ends of problems. laso one of the pulleys could be damaged in some way, creating excessive friction, causing it to fail. Just some ideas

Thanks for comments. I have checked the tension - it is as tight as it can be. There is a small dent in one of the pullies, so maybe that's why they wear so quickly.

In any case - i need to change it. Can someone please tell me how to do it. Should be really simple, but when I checked, I wasn't quite sure which bolt i needed to loosen in order to slacken it off.

Thanks.

You need to undo two bolts and then the tensioner aswell, the first one being a c:nt that is between the sump and PAS pump the second one is the one that the tensioner bolt go's through (does that make sense  :undecided:)

I have the same problem, changed the belt, re-tensioned and after a few days the screeching slowly comes back.

On closer inspection, a crack was found on one of the pump mounting brackets, and when the pump is under load (turning the steering wheel) it is allowed to move, due to the cracked mount, thus reducing the tension on the belt.

i was told you can't buy the mounts separately, as they come with the pump. I am currently trying to source on at the scrappy.

Might be worth checking your mounts.

Good luck.

I have checked the tension - it is as tight as it can be.

Just a thought... If its too tight you can fook up the PAS pump bearing. IIRC it needs about 5mm off deflection (thats what I've got anyway) and it doesn't screech.

Ive replaced my belt twice in the last year since having the car. The tensioner bolt was rusted solid and snapped as soon as I tried to undo it so ive replaced it with a nut and bolt, works fine.
