Title: Does the throttle body need re-setting?
Post by: Lee_dub on 05 May 2008, 21:34
The missus's 1.4 Polo SE has been having some major running problems, i was told it was the Throttle position sensor so I took off the TB and im going to buy a new one from GSF.  After ive fitted the new part will I have to get the TB alligned on vag com? and will the engine management light go out or will that need erasing?

Cheers

Lee

I wouldn't just buy a new one.. Try cleaning the old one out with carb cleaner first.  helped my Passat a lot.

VAG-com isn't usually necessary.  After fitting new (or cleaned) TB, just turn on ignition but DON'T START THE ENGINE.  you should hear a whining noise coming from the TB for around 30 seconds as it calibrates itself.  When it stops, it should be done.

I am assuming it's the same on a 1.4 Polo (you don't say what year...), but this was the case on my 98 1.8T passat.

oh, and light will probably stay on until you clear faults with VAG-COM or similar.

Oh sorry mate tried to come back on last night but the forum wouldnt let me on.  Its a W reg 1.4 SE think its the 75 BHP one.  The car was running like a dog mate and you could floor it on the accelerator but get no revs. it was really clean inside as well.  Ive been told it is the Throttle position sensor thats gone but i dont really know.  New TB is 140 from gsf so was guna go for that.

Cheers for your help so far mate
