As above... Been on a trip to Meadow Hall today, I filled her up and reset the multi trip(1). It's about 3 miles to the motorway then on went the cruise at 80. I was checking the MPG whilst on the go and it varied from 25 to 30, I'd forgot to check the figure at the end so I repeated this on the way home. 58 miles travelled @ 26.7 MPG for an average of 60MPH. I use Shell 95 RON petrol as I have tried 98 RON stuff and found it to be more MPG than 95 RON (yes it feels more spirited but then I use yet more fuel). For the first 2 years the multi trip(2) was always about 25/26MPG but is now down to 21/22MPG (this has never been reset since picking her up from new). My question is do you think I've got a problem somewhere, I had a good blast the other day down the A63 in second and third gear too see if it was anything to do with the turbo pressure and to blow a few cobwebs off so to say. I found this to be ok IMO. Can any of you lot advise.....

if its any conselation, i never get above 30mpg on any long trips :embarassed:
Check your tyre pressures and turn AC off if you have it on - they contribute to poor mpg's
-
Several factors, like has been said, town commute's and short jorneys., ie less then 10 minute trips will show mpg figure.Any remaps,
exhaust mods and using anything 98 octane and lower will give you a poorer figure. ALWAYS use 99 octane if you have a Shell or Tesco that
have 99 octane and not the 97 stuff.
using air con, heated seats, any High powered ICE systems if fitted etc all adds up. If you have DSG might be worth trying setting to manual and using the paddles as ive found it
improves your mpg as the gearbox will try and get you into the highest gear when you can travel more economically putting less LOAD on
the engine. ie 4th/5th on town runs rather then getting into 6th doing 30mph as an example.

On a long trip with cruise set at 80 my gti will average 37mpg.

Thx for the quick response guys... I can't understand why for the first two years it's been about 25/26 MPG then for some reason it's took a downturn to 21/22MPG. I sure the last time we went to Meadow Hall I got nearly 30MPG... My town driving style hasn't changed as far as I'm aware. That's why I thought that something might be at fault.
Another thing is OIL USAGE.. I check mine regular and I haven't had to put a drop in. I still have the unopened bottle in my boot. I have it serviced yearly and have checked the oil both cold(first thing in a morning) and after been stood for 30mins after a run...
Cheers

Has the MPG changed since you had the 19"s fitted. They are bigger heavier and wider giving more drag and higher rolling resistance than the 18"s

i have noticed strange mpg figures in all my cars, eg on the way to somewhere i got 30mpg, but on the way back i couldnt get over 28mpg ??, i guess the heat could have affected it in your case

MPG computer is never very accurate, try doing it old school, fill her up and take note of the mileage.
-
My trip to work is about 21 miles, "mainly" in a down hill direction = 29 - 30 mpg
Trip home "up-hill" 27.5 mpg. Sames roads
Oh by the way was Meadowhall busy? It wasn't too bad on Sunday
-
Meadowhall is my local too
21mpg is low.
Even with my remap and enthusiastic driving I get more than that as an average
-
town driving I get 26 mpg, motorway with 80mph indicated average 36mpg, country lanes 38mpg or 32mpg driving hard. Most my trips are sub 3 mile town driving and my overall average is 29.5 mpg.
-
yes if you live in rural area's then you would expect to get 28-30 mpg, but inner city dwellers will get between 25-27. Stop starting. traffic lights and cueing traffic, watch the trip reading lower the longer you sit stationary.. i try and avoid the range reading as its deppressing watching your tank range drop 20 miles for a 5 minute traffic cue

When I first got my car I checked the computer mpg and found it to be spot on.
I have noticed that since the weather has warmed up I can get an extra 3mpg on my route to work, on mainly motorway and Dual carriageway.
Can actually get 37 to 38mpg. Note the 'can'!
-
Just one more thing.... as a example if I fill her up to the brim I use to be able to get 90 miles to the 3/4 mark now when I do it I get about 78/80 miles.

There's not much difference in mpg if my cruise is set at 60 or 80,and Phil you won't get anywhere near that in the ed30.

I found after owning all 3 GTi's , they are all the same. i still get 310-320miles to a full tank, i thought the ed30 would be more, but was pleasantly surprised
-
I would say i'd get about 270 to a tank of juice... will try seeing I filled to the brim today before the trip...

My ED 30, run on V-power, gives about 33-35 mpg, I rarely do short journeys, do about 1000miles a month in 4 main journeys (weekly commutes) and a bit of running about.
I get about 370 from a tank, always use the AC, and boot it when needed. The Retro fitted cruise has not made a large difference. I am very happy with it.

Being told on another site that it could be this... PCV
Positive Crankcase Ventilation failure
Background:
The positive crankcase ventilation is supposed to let gases get sucked from the crankcase to the intake manifold when under vacuum. The problem is, when the pcv system fails, and allows positive pressure (boost) to go from the intake manifold back into the crankcase.
The latest PCV is the “G†version. To see which version you have, take a small mirror, and stick it under the pcv valve. The last letter identifies the revision (“E†is shown below). The part # is under the round section:
Symptoms:
-Typically you will see a slight drop in boost pressure. When my pcv failed, I saw a 2 psi drop across the board.
-Some oil will be pushed out through the oil filler cap, and onto the valve cover, and may possibly go towards the coil packs. There may also be some oil on the bottom side of the engine cover, where the oil filler cap is.
-There might be a slight decrease in MPG.
-Rear PCV failure usually results in oil accumulation around the DV, and will produce a little blue oil smoke at WOT applications.
Solution:
-There is the Digitalhippie fix which puts a check valve into the line from the crankcase to the intake manifold. For those who want a spare of the hose where the check valve is installed, the part number is 06F 103 221 F. You can read more about it here: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/...=8952
-You can also upgrade to the latest PCV “G†valve. There have been very few failures reported with this PCV. Please verify the PCV you have before upgrading.
Part numbers for this upgrade:
PCV valve cover assembly: 06F 129 101 G
PCV valve cover gasket: 06F 103 483 E
PCV valve cover to turbo hose: 06F 103 215 A
PCV tube to turbo metal gasket: 06F 145 757 F
Do we in the UK have these...

Personally I'd have the car back to the dealer. Driving style counts for alot, but there should be some consistency in figures here. Too big a margin IMHO.

Yes all GTi's have PCV's.
Your mpg does seem low Martin, I average 26/27 in my ED30, mixed/sprited driving, with the mods listed below runnin well over 300bhp.
Is there any signs of oil around the oil filler, as I believe this is one of the first indications of PCV failure.
It sounds like you need to get it checked out
-
With mileage that low....... Its time for a R32!!
-
Martin that is a low mpg.
I'm based in beverley and the daily run to M1 jnct 32 will always be about 31-32 mpg average, even if it dips to 18 average on the run to north cave on the B1230. This is with cruise set at touch above yours in a standard gti with 17"s.

I had mastered the art of "economical" driving in the MK4. Im still getting used to the gearbox in my MK5. I do a 1 hour trip to work in the morning (which believe it or not is only 15 miles) 30 minutes of which is sitting at the Blackwall Tunnel approach doing only about 3/4 miles. I managed to do that in 27.9 MPG which I thought was pretty decent. I could only manage 29 - 30 at best in the MK4 so it really does go to show what an improvement the FSI engine is.
As Phil said I try and not look at the MPG figure too much as it can be depressing reading sometimes lol
