Title: best place to get a mkII for spares or repair?
Post by: wil0 on 04 May 2008, 18:47
Hi, im trying to find a standard MKII 16v GTI for a bit of a summer project.
Im after one with near perfect body work  in green, black or grey but with mechanical problems for cheap, so that i can rebuild the engine and gearbox over the summer tuning it a bit. Apart from that i want to keep it completely standard looks wise.
Any ideas where i can find something like this?

Cheers

Aren't we all?

Your biggest challenge will be finding one with a good body, after at least 15 years in the environment.

Good luck.

I thought that golfs were pretty resilient to rust? are there typical places where rust starts?
I really want an oak green one that hasnt been molested, but they are near impossible to find.

I think it depends the G reg one I had was starting to rust quite a bit. But the E reg Ive got now has very little, never been welded and only a few bubbles showing.... But mine was wax oiled at some stage as inside everypanel its covered in the stuff!

When did you last see a mint car in a scrapyard!?

Personally mate i think freeads or similar will be your best bet, someone out of the forums that has looked after the car but had  a mechanical failure and just wants rid.
