Title: whats yours sound like at 1800 revs?
Post by: 182_blue on 03 May 2008, 17:18
is it me or are Gti's a little noisy at the 1800 rpm mark ?, anything before or after that and its fine ?, but at that mark i find it a little loud (the exhaust i mean), do the GTis have a flap on the exhaust like i hear the r32's have ?

The ED30 with a Milltek sounds quieter if anything at low revs. Higher up it comes alive. GTI's at 1800rpm are just below the threshold for the Turbo kicking in and so I'd expect a better sound after 2k revs anyway.

Mine from the rear, but you'll get the idea

Hi 182_blue

My GTI sounds quiet at 1800rpm, just took it out to test. Windows down and in a quiet road its acutally very quiet. It gets a bit noisier around 2500 then starts to whistle after the turbo spins up.

One question for you, which Audi forum would you recommend as it looks like the wifes chosen her car at last.

Oh well at least I'll get the GTI all to myself!!!

its odd, outside the car i dont know about, but in the car at about 1800 theres a sort of boom from the exhaust, if i drop down to 1500 it goes away, if i go over 1800 it goes, but if you keep it around 1800 imo its a bit boomy, same as when you back off, it reminds me of a aftermarket exhaust i once had (obviously its standard though)

It is probably a bit of resonance getting through between 1500 and 1800 revs. Resonance builds up through the natural frequency that your car vibrates at. It maybe that yours resonates in that rev band through some loose connection or particular part that vibrates in that range :undecided:

My turbo is really quiet, I just realised that. In my old 225TT it was really loud which I loved. Remap needed here!!!!!

No point having a turbo if you cant hear it!!!

I can hear my turbo kicking in at around 2k revs and after 3k revs i get that nice swishing noise when i back off from the pedal

yeh, i hear my turbo too, but nothing to intrusive, just this 1800 rpm boom, perhaps its the GTi makers trying to make it sound sporty ??

Hmmn I dont, after 15 mins driving round the block it only seems to even be barely "whistling" at 2500, and I dont get a swishing noise at all!
The TT had a really nice whistle, especially going up hills or under load.

Havent noticed any sort of boom (will check tomorrow at some point!) but as for the turbo noises mine makes a lot of whistles and swooshes and it sounds brilliant :D. nothing too chavvy/neddy but just right!

Im sure i read a thread on this forum about the "swishing" noise. Some people said theres didnt make it but some said they's does. Might be worth a search. The swishing kicks in around 3k revs and i get a noise sound when i change the gear and keep the revs up.
It might depend on how well the engine/exhaust system is bedded in????

Oh and mines the standard GTI without any remap.
Mine makes a nice noise at low revs and its gets better up the rev range  people do turn around to see what car it is
BUT its not a chavvy sound!

think i may be confusing noisey with sporty i guess,  just when your jused the a five pot growl it takes some getting used to the GTi

I think you will have to wait till your engine and system if fully bedded in mate............perhaps till the engine has opened up

Full Milltek Tubo-back exhaust including the downpipe and free flow sports cat....obviously nothing less will do

Yes, mine is resonated.

I'd heard a few comments about the non-resonated Milltek being boomy at motorway speeds and I wasn't really after much more noise anyway (only really wanted the power ) and so plumped for the res one :nerd:

Makes sense i suppose, i wonder if the engines restricted somehow until 1k miles or something?

I dont think there are any restictions as such. I think it just needs time to open up. Its one of the reasons why new cars drink so much oil in the first few thousand miles.

how much was a full system hurdy, my system was changed from the turbo to rear silenser, i bet it cost VW an absolute fortune under warranty!. i wonder what the retail price is? let alone what a miltech one costs :undecided:

....As maxamus says, the engine's aren't restricted but are built by German vestal virgins and so are a bit tight to begin with . It's a well known fact that VW engines loosen up with miles.

I don't know about stock exhausts but Milltek stainless steel xzorsts definitely take a few 1,000 miles to mature.

I've got the Non-Resonated Hi-flow+Downpipe Milltek (quad outlets you may have noticed ). It's only a wee bit louder than Resonated which in turn is only a wee bit louder than standard. Full song at higher revs is a joy to listen to. "Sporty" is the most appropriate description and quiet at lower revs. My turbo comes in at about 1,900 revs and power remains waaaay beyond UK legal speeds (tested on German autobahns with vestal virgins in attendance getting excited).

This is what Milltek quads look like [ANY excuse to post a pic and pose!]

Here's a copy of Awesomes reply to me.

"The downpipe is £564.50 retail , our price is £508.05 + VAT

The cat back is retail £384.50 + VAT for the non resonated our price would be £364.05 + VAT

Cat back on the resonated would be retail £450.65 + VAT and our price will be £405.59 + VAT

Fitting we have never done one , but as an estimate approx £148.50 + VAT (3 hours)"

Fitting took 2 hrs.

All in £1190 - and I think the prices have gone up a little since . but they may have become faster at fitting :undecided:
