Post by: matg340 on 03 May 2008, 07:36
Hey folks im lookin at buyin a mk2 gti this wekend the only thing thats putting me of is that it has done 144k !
Most i have seen are around that mark just wonderin what other owners thoughts are on high mile gti,s anythin to look out for ?
I know they are quite strong engines but bit concerned about it :) What are they good for before problems start ?
Cheers Mat

my first gti had 120k, 2nd had about the same and the current one is on about 170.

if they have been looked after they should be ok as far as i'm concerned. go on condition rather than mileage

my old 8v had 170 on before it went pop, and that was only because of the previous owners ignorance

I would agree on the condition over mileage.

Most car over 100,000 miles would have had parts replaced anyway & as long as serviced there are no reasons that they won't gp over 200K.

Head gaskets can go, mine has been changed & thats on 112K, but even if engines let go, they are inexpensive to change.

yep thats what I think, my bodywork is fab, and so is the engine. Engines are cheap.

They are solid well made things unlike a tata, 5 door piece of crap.

A bit tedious maybe, but my dad always said to me, as with the human body, you can always put a new heart in (engine) but you can't do much if the skins knackered (bodywork). So if the bodywork is fine then that's half the battle.
