Title: Intercooler alternatives
Post by: Hurdy on 02 May 2008, 11:39
Well, I've been looking for an intercooler for the old girl and found out that the APR one I was hoping to get doesn't fit the DSG ED30 (see note on Awesome site) This now leaves me in a bit of a quandry as to what option to go for as the S3 and Oettinger ones are virtually the same yet both are designed for the manual box. The only one I see that will fit is the Forge Twintercooler andthis looks like the option I'll end up going for unless anyone has any other alternatives or knows for definite that the S3 one fits.

Help!!!

Wouldnt VW and Audi between them be able to tell you if it fits?

Not necessarily as they aren't standard fit :undecided:

It is a bit academic now as I've gone ahead and bought a Forge one

I am in the process of ordering the S3 Intercooler, it comes with all nec pipe work incl and fits straight onto the ED30, my tuner has fitted two(1 Seat) already and reckons 2-3 hours work and will cost £499 fitted hoping to have it done for the trip to Awesome.

Gaz Its Star Performance, the intercooler roughly £330-60 incl vat alone, with fitting £499.Its slightly bigger and thicker and made of alloy unlike the plastic OEM one, the cooler comes with the necessary pipe work too.A guy ran some before and after vag-com checks and reckons  a reduction in temperature of 20%.

Part no's. I would confirm the pipes come with the cooler 1st as i was told they did.
S3 Intercooler > 1K0 145 803 P
S3 Left Pressure hose > 1K0 145 834 AA
S3 Right Connection hose > 1K0 145 832 L

Some of these posts are very interesting. I was put off the S3 one as I was informed that it didn't have the cooling capacity of the APR one and that the APR one didn't fit a DSG (looks like it may do now :undecided:). The Oettinger one is basically the same as the S3 one and so I thought that it wouldn't have the added intercooling capacity of the APR one either. The Forge write up looks good with proven improvements in bhp and lbft, but my issue in the past was that it didn't look "stock". I'm over the stock look now and so don't mind if it shows at all.

Just my personal opinion Hurdy, I looked into the forge twintercooler pal and I couldn't help thinkin it looked like a botch job, I'm not doubting it works but it just looks half finished and sort of stuck-on if you know what I mean.
Think I'm gonna go the S3 route or maybe take a trip to the money tree in the back garden and get the APR one.

After we've done these mods Gaz we'll only be a short hop away from the big-ass turbo conversion    JBS have quite a few options to go for

I've been reading up a bit more and the Forge Twintercooler can be used in conjunction with the S3 intercooler, so get both

I toiled over coolers for ages and after fitting one for somone else I can't help thinking that the Twinter Cooler adds a restriction where the pipes split off.

I went for the OEM S3 one which incidentally is the same as the Oetinger one.
