Title: URGENT!! Oil Light, Car wont start
Post by: Kenny_1.6 on 02 May 2008, 06:25
well, this has now happened 3 times in the last 24hours.

1st time, was doing a 3 point turn and the car cut out with no warning and refused to start, turning over fine, just not starting. about 30mins later, got it running by pushing it down a hill and jump starting it in 2nd.

later the same night, was sitting speaking to a friend with engine idling fine and then engine cut out. again, wouldnt start, but took an hour this time...

however, about 3am this morning, it cut out when i was going at 60mph but this time i spotted the oil warning lamp just before it cut out, not flashing, just ON. luckily i was on a straight and there was no other traffic behind me, but the car completely refuses to start now

have had to abandon it 20miles away and i NEED my car up and running by 1pm.

Any ideas guys and gals? Its a 95 1.6. car has been majorly holding back lately as i've seen described in so many threads now, and i'm pretty sure its over-fueling, because 8.5mpg on a 1.6 Mk3 CANNOT be normal!!!

please help!!

change the ECU relay to start

yeah, thats first plan of action. waiting for dingbros to open and phone them up. i know it isnt the fuel pump relay as there is plenty fuel coming through. if ECU relay doesnt sort it, hall sensor is next. trying to get hold of OBD2 cable for vagcom, cant find mine

just wondered if anyone could say for certain what problem is from what i've described. 8.5mpg cannot be normal... as for why i'm certain car is over-fueling... still has car but exhaust fumes reak of petrol and if giving the car a "good run", when i stop and look under the car, cat is glowing orange

Could well be a hall sensor fault, speed sensor or crank sensor. Vag com is required to be sure though. Unlike my vectra which I can diagnose the ECU using just a paperclip lol

ah, the VH paperclip test and count the engine management flashes... i had a corsa before my golf

EDIT - do VWs have a safety mechanism which disables the coil if there's a "serious fault" ?? because there's no spark coming from it at all, i assumed thats a safety thing and had heard ECU relay faults and hall sensor faults can cause this?

Kenny have a read through this you may have missed it in the handy Maintenance section above!

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=2080.0

As yours is only a 1.6 some of it may not apply!

yeah, had seen that Len cheers, thats why i'm thinking its either ECU relay or Hall sensor. got to about 6th/7th page of that thread and gave up

cleaned the Throttle body recently?
Mine used to stink of petrol when revving stationary until i had a good clean out.

it maybe the coil as mine avent long gone. broke down a few times first and then went altogether.
as for over feulling it couid b a number of things as mine is doin it and i av tryd al things mentioned above and more and yet it still over feuls f***k knows wat it is..
as for the cat glowing orange that should'nt happen unless you got a rally spec car. lol mines a 20 l 8v give it good raggin earlier and could'nt get it to glow

well, i can assure you, if i have a lively drive through some twisty roads for more than 10minutes, exhaust turns raspy as hell and if i look under my car, cat is glowing orange. considering my exhaust usually has a deep note to it, its rather annoying.

update : went out to the car after work last night... and would you believe this... it started first time

not happy at all, been 2days without the car because it was 20miles away and didnt want to go out there without a few relays. unlocked the car, put the key in, thought to myself "meh, i'll try it fors sh!ts and giggles" and it started up straight away.

drove it home without changing a thing before it decided it didnt want to play anymore. after an hour or 2 speaking to a few mates, changed over the Fuel Pump relay and bloody hell what a difference!!! the holding back is gone, i did about 35 miles and it used roughly a gallon (a hell of a lot better than 8.5mpg thats for sure!!) and the cat is no longer going bright orange.

on a different note... i did go to change relay 30 (ECU relay)... but one slight problem... there isnt one    there's not one in my car or my friends 1.4, so am guessing only the GTi's had ECU relays?

will still be testing with VAGCOM when i get hold of a lead just to make sure all is well, because i dont see how the fuel pump relay would stop the coil sparking, so am guessing the problem of the random death is still there, but all the other problems are sorted. will keep you's updated with what the actual problem is. just a bit strange that it refused to start that morning even after leaving it for 3/4 hours, yet, i go back 2days later, and she starts first time

Relays are funny things, lots of switches inside which use a small voltage to control a larger one, different parts break etc and they can do all sort of things

well, the inevitable happened, broke down less than half a mile from my work    sooner i get a vagcom lead the better!!

EDIT - just had a thought... the crank angle sensor... would this be affected in any way if one of the engine mounts needs replaced? wouldnt really make sense as the distance travelled varies each time it cuts out, but each time it cuts out, it refuses to start again for at least an hour each time

got a lead, installed everything... but VAGCOM cant find the interface... already changed to COM3 but no difference :(

what operating system do you have?
Title: Re: URGENT!! Oil Light, Car wont start
Post by: Kenny_1.6 on 05 May 2008, 21:23
was using XP on them but they was refusing to work full stop. tried it on my mate's laptop and it worked. result of scan :

Address 01: Engine
   Controller: 032 906 026 D
   Component: 1,6l R4 MONO 1.3    D71
   Coding: 00000
   Shop #: WSC 00000
1 Fault Found:
00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
            03-00 - No Signal
Readiness: N/A

so yeah, the dreaded Hall Sensor

could also be timing related if it's not long had a new cambelt, if the timing is too far out it will show a hall sensor fault
Title: Re: URGENT!! Oil Light, Car wont start
Post by: Kenny_1.6 on 06 May 2008, 16:43
if it was timing related, surely that would affect the constant performance of the car? car currently only plays up now and again, but think this is now sorted
Title: Re: URGENT!! Oil Light, Car wont start
Post by: Pete Taylor on 06 May 2008, 22:28
only needs to be a tooth or two out to bring the fault up, if it's not had a new cam belt or the timing changed recently then it probably wouldn't be that

not sure when timing belt was done last actually, certainly not within the last 3000miles anyway, so i had ruled that out
