....or is it just me?
I replaced the manifold gaskets and resealed the whole exhaust and there doesn't appear to be any leaks, but the car still stinks of fumes in the cabin. I find myself driving round with the window open all the time because the hot air blower just fills the car with petrol fumes.
Is it just a side effect of old motoring, or just my car?
-
Sounds like you should check your fuel tank breather pipes.
-
Ou est ca? Stangely enough you can only really mell it when the engine is warm - and its intensity increases if I put the blower on.
-
if it smells more with the blowers then the leak is in your bay as thats where it draws the air from. get under your bonnet, engine running, and have a sniff round the injectors, fuel lines etc etc. have a feel about also for moisture, if your finger smells of petrol, bingo :)
-
but to answer your question.
no lol
-
Mine smells bad too, especially when warming up.
Takes a while to turn over so might be a timing issue, previous owner told me it runs a bit rich. :undecided:
-
The best way to see how bad the problem is, would be to wait untill it smells real heavy of petrol and then carefully remove a match..........

I have had this problem on my last two MKII's, and I have it on my G60. It will be the fuel supply pipes that run up from under the car. Open the bonnet and on the drivers side, (your drivers side) you will see two rigid fuel pipes with flexible attached that run to the injector or carb. One supply, one return, (if its injected). Start the car up and see if these are leaking or weeping.
Rubber fuel pipes age and the clamped part will perish away. Just remove the swaged clips, cut back the perished part and reconnect the rubber pipes with small jubilee clips.
These pipes and connections are just under the cabin fan inlet, so you will get the fumes in neet fashion.

The fuel lines don't run up the passenger side on my car, they come up the inside of the chassis leg of the drivers side, they pop out just under the brake master cylinder, where they connect to the metal lines which run to the fuel reg on top of the airbox.
Last time I had jubilee clips on the fuel lines on the Golf, the K-Jet pressure blew them off within minutes.
Nonetheless, I've never noticed any fuel leaks, but I will have a look.
-
try looking at the left and ised of the bulk head where the fuel line come into the engine bay as mine rubbed through just behind the inlet manifold. couldnt see it at first so i hed to pull the to pipes apart and found the tude had warn thin. the vw garage that GAVE me some pipe yes i said gave not sold told me that its a common place.
hope this helps.
-
yeh i used hose clips on mine, proper clamped them up and never leaked. Just and asshole to cut off when you removed your lump

Jubilee clips are too small. As said previously you need proper petrol clips. Any good autofactor will sell ones that it's easy to do up and undo, with a screw.

Thats what I said!

Do fumes have to be a leak, it can't be down to poor/rich/lean running?

if it did stink i wouls say its rich. Check the mixture.
-
Not sure how to do it without letting the generous Wakefield garages charge me £50+ for their time, girlfriend said there was copious amounts of black smoke when I was reving it up the other day.
-
black smoke indicated oil burning. correct me if im wrong. white smoke means too much air in mixture and blue smoke too much petrol in mixture. Correct me if im wrong though, cos im not 100% sure.
-
If you want it tuning when you get rid of the fuel smell take it down to Tony at ART down towards brasserie 99 at the B+Q roundabout, thats where I'm taking mine again when the respray is done. He's a top guy and made mine go like a missile!! I did a standing 1/4 in 15.2 in my standardish mk2 16v he rolling road tunes it for around £50.
I had a really bad fuel smell on the gf's polo and it turned out to be the fuel cap which had gone might be worth checking. On K-jet if you get a fuel leak it will not run as the system works on pressure so you would know about it!
If your stuck give me a shout a friend of mine has just broken a mk2 k jet 8v so have plenty of bits and pieces knocking around :)
-
I'll try him if I can't find a leak and the starting problem gets worse. Ironically I currently use the garage opposite the Mazda dealers by the B&Q roundabout, but had issues with a CV boot they fitted on my old VTR.

Yup, thats what I was thinking. I reckon its more petrol fumes, ie. exhaust fumes. My car still goes like a rocket, tanked it past a porka at a moderate speed uphill this evening.

Blue smoke is fecked lump/head/burning oil. White smoke is water and black smoke is a diesel motor ... Not really sure on the black smoke, might also be bad burning oil?
-
Black smoke from a petrol = WAY too rich mixture.
Blue = oil being burnt = v. bad
White = water = headgasket gone.
Black smoke from a diesel = foot down too hard, or blocked air filter WAY too rich mixture again.

I like the idea, would agree if it was a Skoda

Just popped a panel k&n filter in the car and done 480 miles to Cardiff and back for the Millenium Weekend and not smelt fumes once, apart from when we were stood in traffic for 40 mins during a bad smash and the car and weather both got hot, smelt a hint of fumes then.
-
I noticed a smell of petrol in my digi a few days ago, popped the bonnet and noticed the fuel rail was a bit wet with petrol, probably from the fuel pressure regulator seal, i'll check it out this week.

I would have but there were are few Saint Helens fans knocking about.
