Which sensors do you need info on?? there's loads of them on the mk3!! controlling all sorts...
but the guide listed above is a good start

Sorry Mowat i was a little.
I have been having a little niggly problem. It stated last year with the very common problem of the revs dropping and the car dies. I thought we had got to the root of the problem. I had had the Hall sensor changed, and the camshaft/crankshaft sensor (the one behing the oil filter).
Since about xmas, i have had the odd dip in revs but that was as far as it went. This problem seemed to go about the end of jan when i started to get my fuel from sainsbury's instead of shell, dont under stant that personally.
Then at the weekend i was off down to London, car was running fine, well that was untill i got to the m6 toll. The revs started to go eratic, but it only lasted about hlf mile. it carried on fine untill the end of the m40 when it started to do it worse.
On the way back, topped the car up and crossed my fingers. 200 miles later the car was running well. Think i spoke to soon, back came the problem. I was thinking it may have been somthing in the tank getting burnt off, but it seemed to last too long, although was at the same petrol point (just over quarter of a tank).
Any how, ran the car on vag com sunday night and it said i had an intermittent fault on the engine speed sensor. (00513)
Is this a different sensor to the camshaft/crankshaft one?

Nope its the same sensor dude, did you buy a cheap replacement one, as it might still be worth checking out. I have read on here that the cheaper ones can have issues but the siemens or genuine vw one is a lot more reliable.
How does the car run if you use super unleaded? Im sure i read something about a knock sensor, dont know if that would have anything to do with it (sorry my knowledge of these things isnt the best).
-
Thats what i needed to know. Thanks flex.
I think its something to do with the earth to it. Going to try and sort it tonight. Will keep you posted.
Oh and i always try and get the higher octane petrol
-
Just a quick question.
Where would you find the make on the sensor?
I did have a quick look last night but couldnt see anything, and tbh it looks like it has been there alot longer than a year!!! :undecided:
I will post a picture of it tonight
-
Erratic revs will be due to an air leak rather than a sensor
-
would that cause the odd drop in revs? and the stalling aswell though?
-
Nope, that's more likely to be the ECU relay, both that and the fuel punp relay should be changed at this age of the car regardless as they're a common fault. To be sure of diagnosing the problem properly you should get hold of vag com and give it a quick scan. You can always ask if theres anyone near you that will come and scan it for a couple of beers
-
If tidying up my earth tonight doesnt do the trick, i will move onto the ecu relay, as i'm sure the feul pump one got changed last year my vw
thanks
-
had the same problem with my 8v. would drive fine the revs would die and pick up and then die, so on. and some times it would start up like it. turned out to be the maf sensor. if you can get the vehicle to do it at a stand still, open the bonnet and unplug the maf, if its the maf, when unplug the ecu puts a set vaule in and should run quick normal. hope this helps

Well it was nothing to do with the earth!!.
Cleared the engine speed sensor fault and started the car again, didnt come back straight away. Went out last night and all was good, but this morning coming down the motorway the revs dropped and picked up again.
Turned into work and the car died on me, then started it up again a couple of minutes later to go into my car park and it died right at the barrier!
Going to try the ecu relay next i think. Does anyone know the part number?
-
run another scan, if the engine speed sensor shows again you know what needs changing
-
I'm going to do that as soon as i get home, but i though i might aswell change the ecu relay as its like 14quid, Then i guess i'll have to get the speed sensor changed
-
Update for anyone who is interested.
I have been home for lunch and did a check with vag com. No faults were found with the speed sensor.
I have also ordered a new ecu relay £11.38 from local vw dealer. I can pick it up tomorrow, so i guess its cross fingers now
-
probably an old fault code then, shame the ECU doesn't log a date when the fault was first logged
-
My thoughts exactly
-
Well my part is ready for collection, i just need to hope i can get to vw. The car died 9times on the way to work today. its even started to do it when the car is just idleing
-
Well that didnt work.
Its off the the auto electrian on wednesday now to see if he has any ideas
-
Very weird, give it another scan, maybe that engine speed sensor fault has re-appeared
-
I will do when i get it home. Will pick it up when the roads are quiter so i dont need to stop.
Do u have any ideas? especially if nothing comes up through vag com
-
Well the oil light flashing and cutting out is nearly always a speed sensor fault or ECU relay fault so it must be throwing up that fault again. Other engine faults that go unscanned are dead ISV or cream crackered ECU temp sensor but they wouldn't cause your symptoms
-
I guess i will just have to wait and see. It is definately a puzzle.
I'd had this sort of problem last year just before i went on holiday, which was a crap time to have it.
The only thing that may be a bit dodgy, but to my knowledge and that of my dads - who was an electrician, was i have had to put a different earth to the speed sensor. I have apparently got an earth problem on the ecu, but to be honest i dont entirely trust the mechanic who did this. He couldnt even put the distributar back on properly!!!!
-
Got it home ok last night, just died when i was sat on the drive reving up to 3krpm and then letting them drop. Only had to do this 4 times.
Put it back onto vag com but still no codes for engine.
-
Just been out for another look at the car. The only two things i could fine was
1. A damaged middle wire (green and black i think) to the ignition coil.
2. What looks like a worn distributar arm
Think these are my next best option to solving my problem
-
If they're broken they should be fixed anyway! Whilst your there, vheck all the 3mm id vac hoses for leaks and breaks
-
Its not broken ll the way through. I will get a picture for you. Its very strnage how it would get damaged.
-
Here are those pictures

Opinions please

I can only see the first picture so I can't pick up much from that :|
Are you definately sure the fuel pump relay was replaced? If you're not 100% i'd get one from VW
-
Oh sorry, dont know why that is. It shows up on mine.
Was thinking about the wire. I think it could be where its been tested but they have just left it wide open.
I'm sure they did change it, but no harm doing it again. I didnt pay for the last one
