I always considered Audi to be a gentlemans car. The type of car your father drove, the type of car that never went over 3000RPM. Its seems that life has informed me that this is not true.
This weekend I decided to allow myself some freedom. I have two friends called Francois and Keith. They live together and share two cars. A 2006 Audi A4 and a small golf. Keith being 19 years old and all I never really paid much attention to him when he told me that this Audi Sedan thing was fast. Surely at the age of nineteen any vehicle is fast.
Well. Little did I know. :lipsrsealed:
Got picked up on hostel by Francois (Who is 42 years old) and went through to his house to pick up Keith. We decided a good meal with some friends and of course some drinks along with a few clubs was in order.
The driving was normal and honestly did not feel any different to driving in a GTi. To me it seemed slower.
We got to some traffic lights and a big fat BMW 330i pulled up next to us.
:embarassed:
I almost wet myself. OMW those Audi's are powerful. The sound is awesome. The acceleration was nothing I have ever felt.
The following day Keith wanted to drop me off at home. Home is a good hour away and involved numerous back roads through vineyards. Keith drives this road everyday and has done an advanced driving course. Well did we have fun.
Im not sure what it is about this Audi but everyone wanted to race us. The first car was a MK3 VR6. I must admit it kept up pretty well. But in the corners fell away. And then we had a lunatic in a MK5 GTi attempt to take us on. Well..... He knew how to drive. But I think that driver skill wise. Keith although much younger is so much more experianced. He also does go kart racing and cycles (Cycling is a huge factor to being a good driver btw).
We came into a long sweeping corner and instead of braking KEith floored the car and put a four wheel drive vehicle into a drift.   Not just a short drift. But a long drift and perfectly controlled.
I think I have Audi fever.... I think my first car might be an Audi and not a Golf. :undecided:
I am no longer in denial. I want an Audi!!
The question I'm posing now is. Why are you guys not driving Audi's? I can pick up the same Audi second hand for 6666 pounds cheaper than a GTi. Even the price difference is evil.
Discuss please.
Mike
P.S- Long story for a short question. But I have to put things in perspective so that people understand else I get PM's about how irresponsive we are etc.
-
Perhaps an off topic post IMO
-
Now imagine a better 4wd system, and a bigger engine all in a Golf 5 body. That, my friend, is why I don't drive an Audi
-
Sorry if its a bit off topic. Im probably gonna get ragged by the R32 guys... But I would rather have this than the R32 :embarassed:
The interior is  and it looks really decent. For those that are not catching on to what I am saying. The point of this thread is to ask why you guys would rather have a R32 or equivelant of a R32 than a Audi that is much cheaper? And still performs the same.
I personally feel that Audi has a "old mans car" stigma attached to it but I have seen otherwise.
What is the view on this?
Cos I am seriosuly considering a test drive for my dad.
-
I considered an S4, but the A4 is just too slow. Plus my interior is much nicer.
-
My girlfriend and I both bought 3.2 V6 Audi Quattro DSG A3's.
I sold mine and bought the GTI and she currently has hers up for sale.
I won't deny it was a great car and much better handling than the GTI but if you think VW dealers are bad wait until you try the Audi dealerships!!
Secondly we live in a country where fuel prices have gone up by 20% this year and are rising daily, so the low mpg figures make it difficult to justify if you do a medium to high mileage and the 3.2 V6 is soon going to cost over £400 a year to tax. On top of that it'll cost £25 a day to drive it into London.

Only just noticed that part  Can't wait to see your justification on that one.

Audi A4:
217BHP
300 NM Torque
0-100 Km in 6.5 seconds
Golf R32:
247BHP (3.2 Litre though)
236 NM Torque :undecided:
0-100 Km in 6.2 seconds
I think the torque spec I got on the R32 is wrong. But if its right then the Audi sounds very equally matched?

how much does an A4 weigh

Oh my.. I expected that.
My justification for that is and this only counts for a few cyclists though:
1. Most cyclists like myself and Keith. When we ride we are always looking up ahead. Always planning and thinking ahead. Most drivers drive under their noses. Cycling has taught me this and that way I can easily see what cars are ahead. Where your normal driver does not see the Motorbike or cyclist and usually has an accident.
2. Cycling you see the road differently. You are on the road and that gives you extra experiance. Call it a better understanding of the road perhaps. But you have better judgement.
Some people will disagree with this. But I feel that cycling teaches you the importance of forward planning when driving and that important.

whoa whoa whoa.. are you talking about a DIESEL audi? haha.. hush now.
-
Weight of A4:
1510 KG
Weight of R32:
1594 KG
Im running out of excuses :undecided:
no. Its a petrol and a manual
-
Then the stats you posted are way off, where are you getting these from? An 06 quattro audi is 1580 and the R32 1510, methinks your sources are a little misguided.
-
I took them off Carfolio.com
I spoke to Francois. The car is a 2003 model. Its the B6 or something generation.
:embarassed:Wikipedia is your friend :embarassed:
Sorry for the confusion.
-
Ah, now I see.. I know the model you mean, its a whopping 5kg lighter than the R32. Low down torque monster, it may be close up to 60mph but after that it's byebye Mr. Audi. You can't really compare it to any model mk5 golf though, they're cars from different generations.
ps. your point about cyclists only works with people that have no driving experience.. once you start driving you'll soon see what its all about :afro:
-
Micsta...when looking at cars i did look at an S4 and an RS4 (i have a friend with an RS4), even considered an S3 but....for some reason at this age i feel more of a hatch guy plus the roads in gib are not that wide and having a saloon for me may be abit difficult, im not the best at judging the car in tight spaces and am often scared of scratching anything...but...maybe you should consider a good drive in an R32, with a good driver ofcourse who cycles  (sorry for that) and then you might just change your mind....dont think the exhaust note of the A4 could compare with the R32 either
-
Now bring on the ED30 boys telling us we're all wrong and you don't need 4wd to go round bends quickly
-
In my own considered opinion, cycling has nothing to contribute to driving a car on the roads properly. Get some good advanced driver training to see how a car can perform dynamically and go and practice on a track. Then drive it properly and legally on a road. Job done :smug:

Hey Mike,
I kinda get where your coming from on this as I had an Audi A4 1.8T Quattro Sport. Ok not the quickest thing around (180BHP), but OMG what a fantastic car. Also very tunable and such a Q car.
Not sure about the 3 Litre what with fuel cost etc, and the extra weight. If you insist on an Audi mate go for the 1.8T or 2.0T. Less weight, more fuel efficient and limitless tuning possibility..................
All said and done though Mike, it's not a GTI
-
Now bring on the ED30 boys telling us we're all wrong and you don't need 4wd to go round bends quickly
What Topher said!!

Fairplay Manu
I just feel that the Audi is a different car to the R32. Its a different shape and driving in it feels so much different. I have been in a Gti that was being thrashed and I have been in a R32 for a short drive and not to fast. I still feel that the Audi seems more controlled and might I say it.... Sophisticated...
With no doubt im certain the R32 is more fun to drive maybe but I was extremely impressed with this Audi.
And of course the Ed30 boys will kick a fuss.
The cycling thing is my opinion and I cycle in a large group and many of them are much better drivers than most people. Its the same with someone who rides a motorbike.
And of course... Its not a GTi  Its a freaking 3 litre quattro
-
Im, not old enough to be driving any A4 yet   (except any S version)
perhaps you should be on the Audi forum
-
I must admit that I like the look of the new Audi A4. But the guy up the road... Just got his paws on a Audi A5 and it is sooo awesome.
Is it just me or does VW need to get its bottom into gear and create something to rival the A5 and A4?
The Jetta/Bora whatever you guys call it is no match and the range is pretty boring. :undecided:
I enjoy comparing the GTi to other cars. But I have found that its extremely difficult to compare the GTi to vehicles that have the same engine etc. Like the A4 etc. Its in its own market.
I want an Audi
-
They won't create rivalry in the VAG stable, which is why you won't see a VW 2.0T 4wd equivalent of the S3, even though it would be very easily done.
-
So...
Basically if you want the better vehicle or the vehicle that is more impressionable you have to buy an S3 or pay up on the R32....
The R32 here in South Africa costs almost the same amount as Bmw M3 or a Porsche Cayman.
I cant be bothered with an R32 if I can pick up a Audi cheaper.

LMAO!
Well I had the S4 from new when I was 36, I wouldn't say thats old, nor is it an old mans car!
I can see where 08micsta is coming from, the cabin in the Audi's really is top notch, and as its a fairly big/heavy car it feels well planted. The S4 really pulls like a train all the way to 155mph, 0-62 in 5.6secs I think from memory, but its above those speeds where it really comes into its own. I was cruising in Germany at 155mph (electronically restricted), and the car seemed to "squat down" and felt very stable. (I have had a few 4 wheel drifts in it myself as I thrashed it around the "Ring" twice, and have had a few advanced driving lessons, track days etc)
Although I actually prefer my GTI to the Audi, its not as high a standard of build, period. I test drove an R32, the GTI and many other cars before deciding, and went for the GTI as it was a good all-rounder, went well, and cost a shedload less on fuel.
Before slamming the Audi's, go and test drive any of the A3's, A4's or an S/RS if you can find one.
Also a note about the leather, the Audi version is so soft and high quality, where the VW looks and feels "rubbery", even though its similar cost.
Still loving the GTI though, a lot easier to live with than having 40K sat on the drive depreciating. If I had the cash coming out of my ears with no mortgage, it'd be an RS4 for me, the GTI for the missus!

^^ i did say the Except the S versions, im not knocking Audis, if i had the money at the time i would have bought a new S3 over the ed30

I was agreeing with you!
BTW I test drove an RS4 the other day, couldn't start the damn thing at first, kept turning the key but nothing happened apart from the dash lights came on. Forgot about the push button thing!!! Was I embarressed having to ask how to start it!
Man that cars violent, revs to 8k easily and pulls like a jumbo jet on take off.
Oh and the noise.....!
-
The noise is what surprised me about this Audi. Normally driving you dont hear much. But wow. Open her up and it roars. I love it. :lipsrsealed:

yeh sorry, im confused, i will up late queing in Tescos to get GTA4 lol

I got GTA4 on friday

great choice , RS4 avant and an ED30 covers all bases , if only! ,
-
I can't knock Audi's too much as I have had 2 in the last 5 years (A3 TDI Quattro and A3 TDI 140 sport DSG).
The 300nm of the Audi you mention Mike, against the 236nm of the R32 is wrong. The R32 has 236lbft which is over 320nm. :nerd:
Just to make Topher happy I'll just mention one thing - Edition 30  However it is like comparing Marmalade and Marmite - they are two completely different things and so there is no comparison.
Don't go for the Audi A4 you'll regret it.
-
I raced my ex-neighbours Audi A4 3.0 Quattro after we bumped into each other at a petrol garage forecourt on the A14 and he couldn't keep up with my Ed30 on a dual carrigeway even though he tried hard accelerating all the way up to 110-20 (kmph of course)

all new drivers should be made to spend the day on a motorbike/ pushbike then you would see a drop in motorbike/cyclist fatalities.

^I agree completely^
