our street in north west london seems to be a mecca for vw golfs, mostly gtis, so we have 2 mk5s already. I still havent driven one, but can well believe the handling improvements, yet i am finding it hard when studying them closely to get excited by their looks. The bonnet to roof profile smacks of 307/MPV i.e. the latest PC styling which i am not a fan of. the mark 4 in my opinion was visually more distracting especially from the back, and parked next to my mark 2 16v, i am still convinced mine is the better looker.................(cue irate new mk5 owners). I am v prepared to shut up when the full gti version turns up though.

I agree - I'm still not convinced by the MPV-like shape of the mk5. :P

the front is awesome, curvy, angry looking, smart headlights, fog lights in the place their meant to be ... looks great.
The rear.. plastic on the bumper does my head in! ... looks too cheap, id rather be bodycolour to the bottom...

I used to have a lovely MK4 GTI until I traded it in during January this year for a MK5 GT TDI - I wasnt convinced on the styling when I first got the car but its slowly growing on me and as an all round package the car is great!! - I think if they had have done something nicer with the rear bumper of the MK5 it would have improved the look of the rear end which I personally think is the only bad part!!

Personally I like styling of the Mk5 GTi (well I would I have one ) - Ii think it is quite understated but still looks like it means business. Plus with a little imagination and a dash of style you can make something that builds even further on the good looks - just look at Rob-Mk5's car for example: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=63714.msg493822#msg493822 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=63714.msg493822#msg493822)

Oh don't get me wrong - I was talking about the standard rear bumper on my GTTDI (and other non GTI Golfs)
I'm with you all the way with the GTI - I'd love one only at the moment they're a few thousand out of my price range!!
When one can be purchased it will be:
- Diamond Black
-Cloth or leather (havent decided yet)
-DSG Box
-Winter Pack
along with any other extras the car I'm looking at has when the time comes!!

I'd have a Mk2 16v any day over my ED 30 if it came down to looks. But the latter is still a very good looking car and it's new therefore more reliable, safer and faster everyday transport. But i bet you one thing the guy i the rare very well sorted MK2 may be going slower but i bet he will be having more fun!

There are no really nice looking cars in the Golf size class. Personally I would say that BMW 1 series has the best styling. Ok it's a bit weird looking from some angles but at least its trying to be stylish! The Golf in its standard from looks boring, it needs the bigger front grill of the GTi and 18" wheels to look acceptable :nerd:
-
The 1 series looks like it sags in the middle from the side view - like a horse with a pot belly
The front and rear is ok for a beemer in standard guise, but it needs the sport pack styling to give it ANY aggression in terms of looks.

1 series

Yes it looks better with the sport pack. I like the sculpted sides, its gives it a tighter look over the wheels than the Golf. It looks good in profile with its long bonnet and small cabin area. The front has a nice flat chunky look to it though its spoiled by the shape of the headlights which give it a worried look  The rear end isn't that great.
There's lots of design going on with the body panels though unlike the flat or slightly curved ones on the Golf.
I think the ED30 is the best looking Golf.

I agree.
