Title: Help! Will Mods Fit?????
Post by: Tom Turbo on 21 April 2004, 09:56
Hi everyone!

I'm a bit of a newbie to to Modding and I wondered if I could have some help!

I know someone selling R32 Coilovers and a R32 Exhaust.

Basically my question is........ will these parts fit my V reg 1.8T golf??

Any help would be great.  :D

Thanks in advance

Hello mate, the Coilovers will fit, but you won't feel much difference to the ones on your car at the moment, try and get some aftermarket ones. The exhaust won't fit straight on, you can make it fit with a few mods, but your better off getting a custom made R32 lookalike exhaust, you'll get a better sound.

Thanks for your reply.

But does the R32 have coilovers as standard then??????

I think the ones being sold are H & R. So will they still fit to my 1.8T?

Thanks

Tom, I think R32_T misunderstood your question -

The R32 does not have coilovers as standard, the ones you are referring to (for sale on uk-mkivs.net?) are aftermarket parts. However, the rear suspension on the R32 (and all other 4motion models) is COMPLETELY different to the front wheel drive models like your 1.8T. In any case, even if the coilovers would fit the rear of a FWD Golf the spring rates would be completely wrong due to the heavier weight of the R32. You would be better off buying suspension components that are tuned for your specific model.

With regards to the exhaust - as the rear suspension is different, again this is of absolutely no use on a 1.8T Golf. The 4wd models (Golf & TT etc) have a large silencer that is mounted across the back of the floor right where your spare wheel well is so it will never fit I'm afraid. Also, being from a naturally aspirated engine, it the R32 exhaust might not do the performance of your turbocharged engine much good anyway.

Don't bother with the exhaust, save your money and spend it on a proper stainless jobbie, from magnex or mongoose or miltek.

Anyway the R32 one is designed for a NA v6 engine which would require a higher back pressure than yours, so it would probably impede the performance on your turbo model.

If possible avoid the custom fit exhausts like powerflow.  They do sound good, but they are put on by guess work.  I had a ?500 powerflow system fitted to my Punto HGT, it sounded the tits and looked the tits but my car was obviously slower. Stick to tried and tested exhausts like the above, plus they will hopefully increase the performance.

Chris,

I stumbled on this during a forum search for R32 suspension compatibility for our Mk4 Anni Tdi...my question is now answered, thanks!!

A local tuner has recommended some aftermarket components which should do the job nicely but I was always curious if R32 kit could be transplanted, as the press were very complimentary about its handling in reviews.  I guess 4wd has something to do with that too of course.
