Title: Serviced my 1.8 and racked up a few miles..
Post by: Rmachines on 24 April 2008, 22:50
How on earth can any one make a 1.8 engine so slow?  i mean surly the is a limit to how much power an engine CANT have?

yea .. anyway i changed the cam belt and re set my ignition timing etc..  Also did the usual TB clean etc.. its had a new dizycap, rotor arm and fresh oil.   the engine seems a bit lumpy on acceleration and has a bit of a flat spot, And it has a total lack of power!   My 1.4 AEX engine IS actualy considerably faster than the 1.8 lol.

The engine its self is good...  I know its single point   Which would explain everything realy but surly it should be a bit faster?   Its a comon engine and im new to it... is there something i could do to get it back up to power?   I like to be able to get up hills without rolling back

Is that a GTI 1.8 or just a normal 1.8 engine? Because I noticed mine can be a bit sluggish.

Just a normal 1.8L   Its beyond slugish It doesnt seem to pull what so ever.. it only picks up speed slowly.

Same as mine then? It's acceleration could be better considering it's size, but I have noticed from about 70 - 100 you'll find it picks up quickly there, but then again when do you pull away from lights / junctions at 70mph?

Mine doesnt pick up at all belive me

My 1.4 is actualy quite a bit faster and that engine has BAD piston slap.  Madness

Bloody hell, looks like you got a problem lol! I only noticed today that it picks up at faster speeds, was on a long dual carriageway today, and an Audi was overtaking so overtook him and put my foot down all the way, did gain quite fast, which made me smile, but it's the acceleration I find a drag...literally.

its bizare. why would they bother?  a 1.8 has so much more potentual.   Whats the 1.4/1.6L go like then??  I have the newer Multi point 1.4 and its actualy fast compared to this.  the older ones must be awfull lol

His wont fall to bits though, and it wont rust half as quick

Seriously though guys, if you want a quick car you dont buy a 1.8 mk3 golf

Ok yours could have something wrong with it slowing it down but its never going to be feel that nippy.

The 1.8 came in two flavours. The 75bhp and the 90bhp (like the Mk2 block). So if you have a 1.8 75bhp block and compare it to an AEX 1.4 with 60bhp, then there may not be much difference.

ahhh 75bhp in a mk3, makes sense as to why it may seem slow now

Mine is the slower one  but i would expect it to be a little faster than the 1.4  Its a MK3 GTI type block, its identical to my 8V, i even changed the rocker covers

Im not to fussed, it pulls ok ish i will change the fuel filter and dump a load of cleaner in it etc. hopefully it will liven things up a bit
