Title: Noise..wheel bearing, tracking or something else??
Post by: boneybradley on 24 April 2008, 17:53
I have a new noise thats appeared and sounds like a grinding noise similar to wheel bearings going but on checking these there all fine.
The only thing i can see is my tracking seems way out (one wheel is straight ahead and the other seems to be off at +5/10 degree's..not noticable when driving but looking at them you can see a big difference! and would that cause trye scrub..)... could this also cause the grind? tryes look fine and all the suspension looks ok with no movement/knocking etc but I'm thinking suspension arm bush?

oh well it' m.o.t time next month and all seems fine for that but this noise is really annoying!! anybody shed any light into this??

well when you said one wheel is straight with the other 5/10 degrees out I assumed you must mean the front!!!! then you said rear suspension beam bush??? so the back wheels arn't pointing in the right direction?

sounds pretty bad if they are....

I didnt explain it well!! it's the front suspension arm rear bushes.. my problem is i don't understand how the tracking can be out so much (when it was fine a week ago) and nothing is loose and it's not being kerbed etc... and the grinding noise has started around the same time.

Not a knakered driveshaft or CV joint is it braders?

Is your hub nut tight?

everything is tight!! and i just can't see how a knackered cv joint would effect the tracking? I am hoping the noise is related to the suspension....but knowing my luck!!

Maybe getting the new coilovers on will correct it then, fingers crossed!

luckily I have lot's of extra's to be done...
coilovers, top mounts all round, front link arms, anti roll bushes and i have some ball joints to be fitted but these can wait unless the suspension arm bushes look worn!! i would replace the full arm but at £100 the pair they can wait!

If wheels are that much out of line then I would get tracking done immediately! It may not fix the grinding noise but at least it will save your tyres!
When its up on the ramps have a good nosey around, maybe you will see something!
Check the anti-roll bar bushes.
